Abstract

Methods and devices for treating anaphylaxis, anaphylactic shock, bronchial constriction, and/or asthma include providing an electrical impulse to a selected region of the vagus nerve of a patient suffering from anaphylaxis to block and/or modulate nerve signals that would regulate the function of, for example, myocardial tissue, vasodilation/constriction and/or pulmonary tissue.

Claims

1. A device for increasing a heart function in a patient, the device comprising:

a power source;

an electrical impulse generator coupled to the power source; and

one or more electrodes coupled to the electrical impulse generator,

wherein the electrodes are configured to be positioned on an exterior of the patient, and

wherein the power source is configured to power the electrical impulse generator such that the electrical impulse generator generates a signal sufficient to facilitate heart contractility in the patient based at least in part on the signal being applied via the one or more electrodes to a selected nerve in an autonomic nervous system of the patient.

2. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

a control unit in communication with the electrical impulse generator and the power source.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the signal comprises a frequency from about 1 Hz to about 3000 Hz.

4. The device of claim 3, wherein the frequency is from about 10 Hz to about 50 Hz.

5. The device of claim 3, wherein the frequency is from about 15 Hz to about 35 Hz.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the signal comprises an amplitude from about 1 volt to about 12 volts.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the signal comprises a pulsed-on time from about 50 microseconds to about 800 microseconds.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the signal comprises a pulsed-on time from about 200 microseconds to about 400 microseconds.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the one or more electrodes is implantable within the patient.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the one or more electrodes is positionable to apply the signal to a vagus nerve of the patient.

11. A device for increasing a heart function in a patient, the device comprising:

a power source;

an electrical impulse generator coupled to the power source; and

one or more energy transmitters coupled to the electrical impulse generator,

wherein the energy transmitters are configured to be positioned on an exterior of the patient, and

wherein the power source is configured to power the electrical impulse generator such that the electrical impulse generator generates a signal sufficient to increase heart contractility of the patient based at least in part on energy being applied via the one or more energy transmitters to a selected nerve in an autonomic nervous system of the patient.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein at least one of the energy transmitters is an electrode.

13. The device of claim 11, further comprising:

a control unit in communication with the electrical impulse generator and the power source.

14. The device of claim 11, wherein the signal comprises a frequency from about 1 Hz to about 3000 Hz.

15. The device of claim 14, wherein the frequency is from about 10 Hz to about 50 Hz.

16. The device of claim 14, wherein the frequency is from about 15 Hz to about 35 Hz.

17. The device of claim 11, wherein the signal comprises an amplitude from about 1 volt to about 12 volts.

18. The device of claim 11, wherein the signal comprises a pulsed-on time from about 50 microseconds to about 800 microseconds.

19. The device of claim 11, wherein the signal comprises a pulsed-on time from about 200 microseconds to about 400 microseconds.

20. The device of claim 11, wherein the one or more energy transmitters is implantable within the patient.

21. The device of claim 11, wherein the one or more energy transmitters is positionable to apply a signal to a vagus nerve of the patient.
