Abstract

A dialysis system includes a dialyzer, a sorbent cartridge configured to clean used dialysate from the dialyzer, a dialysate pump actuator configured to pump dialysate to the dialyzer, and a conductivity sensor located adjacent to a temperature sensor. The dialysis system also includes a disposable cassette configured to carry dialysate pumped by the dialysate pump actuator. The disposable cassette includes a combined conductivity and temperature sensor fluid chamber separate from the conductivity sensor and the temperature sensor and located so as to operate with the conductivity sensor and the temperature sensor, respectively, when mounted for operation.

Claims

1. A dialysis system comprising:

a dialyzer;

a sorbent cartridge configured to clean used dialysate from the dialyzer;

a dialysate pump actuator configured to pump dialysate to the dialyzer;

a conductivity sensor located adjacent to a temperature sensor; and

a disposable cassette configured to carry dialysate pumped by the dialysate pump actuator, the disposable cassette including a combined conductivity and temperature sensor fluid chamber separate from the conductivity sensor and the temperature sensor and located so as to operate with the conductivity sensor and the temperature sensor, respectively, when mounted for operation.

2. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the temperature sensor is housed or integrated with the conductivity sensor.

3. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the conductivity sensor is positioned to sense an electrolyte composition of the dialysate.

4. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the temperature and conductivity sensors are positioned upstream of the dialyzer and downstream from the dialysate pump.

5. The dialysis system of claim 1, further comprising a blood pump actuator,

wherein the disposable cassette is further configured to carry blood pumped by the blood pump actuator.

6. The dialysis system of claim 1, further comprising an air detector,

wherein the disposable cassette further includes an air detection portion located to operate with the air detector when the disposable cassette is mounted for operation.

7. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the sorbent cartridge is located downstream from the dialyzer and upstream of the dialysate pump actuator.

8. A dialysis system comprising:

an on-line dialysate generator;

a dialysate pump actuator configured to pump dialysate generated from the on-line dialysate generator to a dialyzer;

a conductivity sensor located adjacent to a temperature sensor upstream of the dialyzer; and

a disposable cassette configured to carry dialysate pumped by the dialysate pump actuator, the disposable cassette including a combined conductivity and temperature sensor fluid chamber separate from the conductivity sensor and the temperature sensor and located so as to operate with the conductivity sensor and the temperature sensor, respectively, when mounted for operation.

9. The dialysis system of claim 8, wherein the temperature and conductivity sensors are configured to determine that the dialysate has been mixed properly.

10. The dialysis system of claim 8, wherein the temperature sensor includes at least one of a thermocouple, IR sensor or thermistor and the conductivity sensor includes at least one probe configured to contact the fluid chamber.

11. The dialysis system of claim 8, further comprising a blood leak detector, wherein the disposable cassette further includes a blood leak detector portion located to operate with the blood leak detector when mounted for operation.

12. The dialysis system of claim 8, wherein the conductivity sensor is positioned to sense an electrolyte composition of the dialysate prepared by the on-line dialysate generator.

13. The dialysis system of claim 8, wherein the disposable cassette includes a pump portion located to operate with the dialysate pump actuator when the disposable cassette is mounted for operation.

14. A dialysis system comprising:

a batch dialysate source;

a sorbent cartridge;

a dialysate pump actuator configured to pump dialysate from the batch dialysate source to a dialyzer;

a conductivity sensor located adjacent to a temperature sensor upstream of the dialyzer; and

a disposable cassette configured to carry dialysate pumped by the dialysate pump actuator, the disposable cassette including a combined conductivity and temperature sensor fluid chamber separate from the conductivity sensor and the temperature sensor and located so as to operate with the conductivity sensor and the temperature sensor, respectively, when the disposable cassette is mounted for operation.

15. The dialysis system of claim 14, wherein the dialyzer is located downstream of the disposable cassette and is positioned to receive dialysate via the disposable cassette.

16. The dialysis system of claim 14, wherein the dialysate pump actuator is a fresh dialysate pump actuator, and which includes a used dialysate pump actuator configured to pump used dialysate from the dialyzer.

The dialysis system of claim 16, wherein the disposable cassette includes a fresh dialysate pump portion aligned for operation with the fresh dialysate pump actuator and a used dialysate pump portion aligned for operation with the used dialysate pump actuator when the disposable cassette is mounted for operation.

18. The dialysis system of claim 17, wherein the batch dialysate source is located fluidically between the fresh dialysate pump actuator and the used dialysate pump actuator.

19. The dialysis system of claim 14, wherein the conductivity sensor is positioned to sense an electrolyte composition of the dialysate from the batch dialysate source.

20. The dialysis system of claim 14, which includes an infusate additive positioned to replace electrolytes lost in the sorbent cartridge.
