1. A compensator attachable to an anvil of a fastening instrument, wherein the anvil includes a forming surface and a longitudinal slot configured to receive a cutting member, wherein the cutting member is configured to travel between a proximal end and a distal end of the anvil, wherein the forming surface is configured to deform a plurality of fasteners to fasten tissue, and wherein said compensator comprises:

  • a support layer configured to be attached to the anvil;

    a scaffold attached to said support layer, said scaffold comprising;

    a plurality of collapsible scaffold layers comprised of a biocompatible material, said collapsible scaffold layers comprising;

    a first layer comprising a first pattern of fibers oriented in a direction at least substantially parallel to said longitudinal slot and extending between the proximal end and the distal end of the anvil; and

    a second layer comprising a second pattern of fibers interwoven with said first layer; and

    a plurality of cavities, wherein said support layer, said scaffold layers, and said cavities define a matrix favorable to tissue and cellular ingrowth, and wherein said collapsible scaffold layers are configured to adapt to the thickness of tissue captured within the fasteners.
