Abstract

A glucose monitoring system, includes a glucose sensor strip or package of strips. The strip includes a substrate and a glucose monitoring circuit that has electrodes and a bodily fluid application portion of selected chemical composition. An antenna is integrated with the glucose sensor strip. A RFID sensor chip is coupled with the glucose sensor strip and the antenna. The chip has a memory containing digitally-encoded data representing calibration and/or expiration date information for the strip.

Claims

1. A method of determining a glucose level;

the method comprising;

positioning a device comprising an RFID reader within close proximity to an in vivo implanted or partially implanted glucose sensor comprising an RFID sensor chip;

receiving via circuitry of the device one or more signals indicative of the glucose level from the RFID sensor chip;

determining via the circuitry of the device the glucose level based on the one or more signals to provide a determined glucose level; and

displaying the determined glucose level on a display of the device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the device comprises a port for receiving a glucose test strip.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the RFID sensor chip is comprised by a continuous glucose sensor.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the RFID reader is an integrated element of the device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the RFID reader is a detachable component of the device.

6. The method of claim 1, comprising communicating data from the RFID reader to the device through a multi-pin connection.

7. The method of claim 1, comprising communicating data from the RFID reader to the device wirelessly.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein data storage for the RFID reader and the device are integrated into a single location.

9. The method of claim 1, comprising operating the RFID sensor chip at about 13.56 MHz.

10. The method of claim 1, comprising operating the RFID sensor chip at from about 125 kHz to about 134 kHz.

11. The method of claim 1, comprising operating the RFID sensor chip at about 868 MHz.

12. The method of claim 1, comprising operating the RFID sensor chip at about 2.45 GHz.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the RFID sensor chip is an active sensor chip.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the RFID sensor chip is a passive sensor chip.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the RFID sensor chip comprises a memory comprising digitally-encoded data.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the data is glucose data.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein the display is a liquid crystal display (LCD).

18. The method of claim 1, wherein the display comprises a touchscreen.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein the method comprises displaying on the display a communication when the glucose level indicates hyperglycemia.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein the method comprises displaying on the display a communication when the glucose level indicates hypoglycemia.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein the method comprises displaying on the display a communication when the glucose level indicates impending hyperglycemia.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein the method comprises displaying on the display a communication when the glucose level indicates impending hypoglycemia.

23. The method of claim 1, comprising determining trending of glucose level based at least in part on the determined glucose level.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the trending provides for a rate and/or acceleration of glucose level increase or decrease.

25. The method of claim 23, comprising displaying on the display visual indicators of glucose level trending to a user of the device.

26. The method of claim 1, comprising displaying on the display a visual representation of glucose level over time to a user of the device.

27. The method of claim 1, wherein the device further comprises a communication unit.

28. The method of claim 27, comprising wirelessly receiving data and/or application programs from a computer and/or network via the communication unit.

29. The method of claim 27, wherein the communication unit is configured for connection with the internet.

30. The method of claim 1, comprising connecting the device to a personal computer or hand-held computing device by serial port or USB connection.

31. A method of determining a glucose level;

the method comprising;

sending a first radio wave from an RFID reader to an RFID sensor of a glucose sensing device having an in vivo glucose sensor partially or fully implanted in a body;

receiving the first radio wave at the RFID sensor;

sending a second radio wave from the RFID sensor back to the RFID reader in response to reception of the first radio wave, wherein the second radio wave includes a determined glucose level of the in vivo glucose sensor;

receiving the second radio wave at the RFID reader; and

reading the determined glucose level in the second radio wave at the RFID reader.

32. The method of claim 31, further comprising partially or fully implanting the in vivo glucose sensing device in the body.

33. The method of claim 31, wherein the partially or fully implanted in vivo glucose sensing device comprises a glucose monitoring circuit having a plurality of electrodes.

34. The method of claim 31, further comprising, prior to sending the second radio wave, performing electrolysis on a bodily fluid using the electrodes.

35. The method of claim 31, further comprising determining, at the RFID reader, a glucose level of the body using the diabetes information in the second radio wave.

36. The method of claim 31, wherein the RFID reader communicates with a glucose meter, the method further comprising:

inserting a test strip into a port of the glucose meter; and

measuring the glucose level in a bodily fluid sample on the test strip.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein the RFID reader is integrated with the glucose meter.

38. The method of claim 36, wherein the RFID reader shares processing capability with the glucose meter.

39. The method of claim 36, wherein the RFID reader shares memory with the glucose meter.

40. The method of claim 36, further comprising communicating data between the RFID reader and the glucose meter, wherein the data is communicated by way of a cable, multi-pin connection, or wireless connection.

41. The method of claim 36, wherein the glucose meter is modular.

42. The method of claim 31, wherein the RFID sensor is an RFID sensor chip, RFID module, active RFID sensor, passive RFID sensor, or part of an RFID tag.

43. The method of claim 31, wherein the RFID sensor is a passive RFID sensor, the method further comprising using power, at the RFID sensor, of the second radio wave received from the RFID reader.

44. The method of claim 31, wherein the passive RFID sensor does not use a battery.

45. The method of claim 31, wherein the RFID reader comprises a pump.

46. The method of claim 31, further comprising:

sending a third radio wave from the RFID reader to the RFID sensor; and

writing information from the third radio wave in the RFID sensor.

47. The method of claim 31, wherein the first radio wave is in a frequency band around 13.56 MHz.

48. The method of claim 31, wherein the first radio wave is in a frequency band around 2.45 GHz.

49. The method of claim 31, further comprising periodically checking a glucose level of a bodily fluid at the glucose sensing device.
