Abstract

The present disclosure provides methods and apparatuses for providing a visible feedback based on an alignment or a link quality between an external reader and a tag. The external reader transmits power to the tag with a radio frequency electromagnetic signal. The tag may rectify the radio frequency electromagnetic signal and create a rectified voltage. This rectified voltage may be used to power various components of the tag. Once it receives power from the reader, the tag may communicate information back to the external reader. The information communicated back to the reader is communicated by modulating an antenna impedance of the tag. By modulating the impedance, the tag will backscatter radiation transmitted by the reader. The reader is able to create a visual output based on determining the alignment or link quality from the reader to the tag based on the backscatter radiation it receives from the tag.

Claims

1. A reader apparatus comprising:

an antenna configured to;

transmit electromagnetic radiation, and

receive backscatter electromagnetic radiation from an eye-worn device;

a control unit configured to;

analyze the received backscatter electromagnetic radiation to determine an alignment between the eye-worn device that caused the backscatter electromagnetic radiation and the reader; and

generate a signal based on the determined alignment; and

an output unit configured to generate a visual output visible to an eye having the eye-worn device that indicates the determined alignment between the eye-worn device and the reader based on the generated signal.

2. The reader apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the control unit is further configured to determine the alignment based on a received power of the backscatter electromagnetic radiation.

3. The reader apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the control unit is further configured to alter the generated visual output based on a change in the determined alignment.

4. The reader apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the backscatter electromagnetic radiation provides data;

and the control unit determines the alignment based on the data.

5. The reader apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the output unit is further configured to provide a movement instruction.

6. The reader apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the control unit is configured to calculate the movement instruction.

7. The reader apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a handheld housing wherein the antenna, the control unit, and the output unit are located on the housing.

8. A method comprising:

transmitting electromagnetic radiation via an antenna of a reader;

receiving backscatter electromagnetic radiation from an eye-worn device via the antenna of the reader;

analyzing the received backscatter electromagnetic radiation, via a processor, to determine an alignment between the eye-worn device that caused the backscatter electromagnetic radiation and the reader, based on the backscatter electromagnetic radiation; and

generating a visual output visible to an eye having the eye-worn device that indicates the determined alignment between the eye-worn device and the reader via an output component based on the determined alignment.

9. The method according to claim 8, wherein the alignment is further determined based on a received power of the backscatter electromagnetic radiation.

10. The method according to claim 8, further comprising altering the generated visual output based on a change in the determined alignment.

11. The method according to claim 8, wherein the backscatter electromagnetic radiation provides data;

and the determining an alignment is based on the data.

12. The method according to claim 8, wherein generating the visual output further comprises a movement instruction.

13. The method according to claim 12, further comprising determining the movement instruction.

14. The method according to claim 8, wherein the transmitting is performed in response to a handheld device being located near a tag and wherein the handheld device comprises the antenna, the processor, and the output component are located on or in the handheld device.

15. An article of manufacture including a non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon instructions that, when executed by a processor in a system, cause the system to perform operations comprising:

transmitting electromagnetic radiation via an antenna of a reader;

receiving backscatter electromagnetic radiation from an eye-worn device via the antenna of the reader;

analyzing the received backscatter electromagnetic radiation, via a processor, to determine an alignment between the eye-worn device that caused the backscatter electromagnetic radiation and the reader, based on the backscatter electromagnetic radiation; and

generating a visual output visible to an eye having the eye-worn device that indicates the determined alignment between the eye-worn device and the reader via an output component based on the determined alignment.

16. The article of manufacture according to claim 15, wherein the alignment is further determined based on a received power of the backscatter electromagnetic radiation.

17. The article of manufacture according to claim 15, further comprising altering the generated visual output on based a change in the determined alignment.

18. The article of manufacture according to claim 15, wherein the backscatter electromagnetic radiation provides data;

and the determining an alignment is based on the data.

19. The article of manufacture according to claim 15, wherein generating the visual output further comprises a movement instruction and further comprising determining the movement instruction.

20. The article of manufacture according to claim 15, wherein the transmitting is performed in response to a handheld device being located near a tag and wherein the handheld device comprises the antenna, the processor, and the output component are located on or in the handheld device.
