1. A method for distributing IP video comprising:
- prior to transmitting an optical data stream in a designated optical band, receiving a broadcast IP video signal, combining a broadcast IP video signal with an additional IP video signal comprising locally-derived content different from the broadcast IP video signal that is locally generated, and converting the combined IP video signal to an optical data stream in a designated optical band comprising a single designated wavelength;
transmitting the optical data stream in the designated optical band to an optical network terminal (“
ONT”
), wherein the optical data stream comprises a broadcast IP video signal provided as a packetized video overlay, wherein the optical data stream is transmitted by an IP video switch operating in a half-duplex mode of operation, and the optical data stream is transmitted in a promiscuous mode without receiving acknowledgements from the ONT;
replacing an Ethernet MAC destination address (DA) of each packet of the broadcast IP video signal transmitted out of an IP video distribution port of the IP video switch with a video channel identification (CH_ID);
receiving Internet voice and data at an optical line terminal (“
OLT”
);
converting the received Internet voice and data to an additional optical data stream portion in a different optical band; and
combining the additional optical data stream portion into the optical data stream prior to the transmitting the optical data stream to an optical network terminal the ONT;
converting the optical data stream to an electrical data stream at the ONT; and
transmitting the electrical data stream to a subscriber.

17. A system for distributing video, the system comprising:

a video head end connected to receive a broadcast IP video data stream and convert the received data stream from an electrical signal to an optical signal in a first optical band, wherein the video head end comprises an IP video switch operating in a half-duplex mode of operation for transmitting the IP video data stream in a promiscuous mode to an optical network terminal (ONT) without receiving acknowledgements from the ONT, wherein each packet of the broadcast IP video signal transmitted out of an IP video distribution port of the IP video switch comprises a corresponding Ethernet MAC destination address (DA) which is replaced with a video channel identification (CH_ID), and wherein prior to transmitting an optical data stream in the first optical band, the video head end receives a broadcast IP video signal, combines the broadcast IP video signal with an additional IP video signal that is locally generated comprising locally-derived content different from the broadcast IP video signal, and converts the combined IP video signal to an optical data stream in the first optical band comprising a first single designated wavelength;
receive Internet voice and data at an optical line terminal (“
OLT”
);
convert the received Internet voice and data to an additional optical data stream portion in a different optical band; and
combine the additional optical data stream portion into the optical data stream prior to the transmitting the optical data stream to an optical network terminal the ONT;an optical amplifier (“

) for amplifying optical signals received from the video head end;a wave division multiplexer (“

25. An optical network terminal (ONT) comprising:

a triplexer for converting optical signals received on three wavelengths into electrical signals; an Ethernet physical layer (“
PHY”
) module for receiving selected video streams from the triplexer, the selected video streams being received at the triplexer from a remote video head end comprising an IP video switch operating in a half-duplex mode of operation, and wherein the received video streams were transmitted in a promiscuous mode without requiring acknowledgements from the ONT, and wherein prior to receiving an optical data stream in a designated optical band, the video head end received a broadcast IP video signal, combined the broadcast IP video signal with an additional IP video signal that is locally generated comprising locally-derived content different from the broadcast IP video signal, and converted the combined IP video signal to an optical data stream in the designated optical band comprising a single designated wavelength;
receive Internet voice and data at an optical line terminal (“
OLT”
);
convert the received Internet voice and data to an additional optical data stream portion in a different optical band; and
combine the additional optical data stream portion into the optical data stream prior to the transmitting the optical data stream to an optical network terminal the ONT; andan Ethernet switch connected to receive the selected video streams from the PHY module and configured to transfer the selected video streams, wherein the selected video streams are received at the Ethernet switch regardless of a destination address included in the selected video signals, wherein the selected video streams are transferred from the Ethernet switch as a plurality of Ethernet packets that have had their respective Ethernet MAC destination addresses (DAs) replaced by video channel identification parameters (CH_IDs). - View Dependent Claims (26, 27, 28)
