Abstract

A method of encouraging safe driving of a vehicle using a remote starter device installed at a vehicle is provided. The remote starter device may determine whether it is in signal communication with a remote starter application operating at a mobile computing device separate from the remote starter device. When the remote starter device is in signal communication with the remote starter application, the remote starter device may permit ignition of the vehicle. When the remote starter device is not in signal communication with the remote starter application, the remote starter device may prevent ignition of the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle may be identified and a vehicle telematics device installed at the vehicle may provide vehicle telematics data to an insurance underwriting system. A personalized insurance rate for the driver may be determined based, at least in part, on the vehicle telematics data.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

determining, by a remote starter device installed at a vehicle, that the remote starter device is in signal communication with a remote starter application operating at a mobile computing device separate from the remote starter device;

receiving, by the remote starter device from the remote starter application, a request to initiate ignition of the vehicle;

initiating, by the remote starter device, ignition of the vehicle;

providing, by the remote starter device to the remote starter application upon ignition of the vehicle, an ignition confirmation message;

identifying, by the remote starter application, a user of the mobile computing device as a driver of the vehicle;

providing, by the remote starter application to an insurance underwriting system in response to receipt of the ignition confirmation message, an ignition notification message;

creating, by the insurance underwriting system in response to receipt of the ignition notification message, an ignition record;

collecting, by the insurance underwriting system during operation of the vehicle, vehicle telematics data provided by a vehicle telematics device installed at the vehicle; and

determining, by the insurance underwriting system, a personalized insurance rate for the driver based, at least in part, on the vehicle telematics data.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

configuring the ignition record with driver identification information that identifies the driver of the vehicle;

configuring the ignition record with vehicle identification information that identifies the vehicle operated by the driver;

configuring the ignition record with ignition timestamp information provided by a timing module wherein the ignition timestamp information indicates a date and time when the vehicle achieved ignition; and

configuring the ignition record with ignition location information provided by a positioning module that indicates a geographic location where the vehicle achieved ignition.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

providing a shutoff confirmation message upon shutoff of the vehicle; and

initiating an update to the ignition record in response to the shutoff confirmation message.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein:

the remote starter device provides the shutoff confirmation message to the remote starter application;

the remote starter application provides a shutoff notification message to the insurance underwriting system in response to receipt of the ignition confirmation message; and

the insurance underwriting system updates the ignition record in response to receipt of the shutoff notification message.

5. The method of claim 3 further comprising:

configuring the ignition record with shutoff timestamp information provided by a timing module wherein the shutoff timestamp information indicates a date and time when the vehicle was shutoff; and

configuring the ignition record with shutoff location information provided by a positioning module wherein the shutoff location information indicates a geographic location where the vehicle was shut off.

6. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

determining, by the insurance underwriting system, an adjusted personalized insurance rate based, at least in part, on the vehicle telematics data.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

providing, by the insurance underwriting system to the remote starter application, the adjusted personalized insurance rate; and

presenting, by the remote starter application at a display of the mobile computing device, the adjusted personalized insurance rate.

8. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

identifying, by the insurance underwriting system, one or more driving behaviors engaged in during operation of the vehicle based, at least in part, on the vehicle telematics data;

wherein the adjusted personalized insurance rate is further based on at least one of the one or more driving behaviors identified.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

providing, by the insurance underwriting system to the remote starter application, a driving behavior summary comprising an indication of at least one of the one or more driving behaviors identified; and

presenting, by the remote starter application at a display of the mobile computing device, the driving behavior summary.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein:

the driving behavior summary further comprises an indication of a driving behavior of the one or more driving behaviors that contributed to the adjusted personalized insurance rate.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein:

the adjusted personalized insurance rate is less than the personalized insurance rate; and

the driving behavior indicated in the driving behavior summary is indicated as having contributed to a reduction of the personalized insurance rate.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein:

the adjusted personalized insurance rate is more than the personalized insurance rate; and

the driving behavior indicated in the driving behavior summary is indicated as having contributed to an increase of the personalized insurance rate.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising associating the vehicle telematics data provided by the vehicle telematics device with the ignition record.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

providing, by the remote starter application to the remote starter device, an ignition inquiry message; and

receiving, by the remote starter application from the remote starter device in response to the ignition inquiry message, an ignition status message indicating whether the vehicle is running or shut off.

15. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

providing, by the insurance underwriting system to the remote starter application, the personalized insurance rate; and

presenting, by the remote starter application at a display of the mobile computing device, the personalized insurance rate.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

prompting, by the remote starter application, acceptance or rejection of the personalized insurance rate; and

providing insurance coverage of the driver in response to acceptance of the personalized insurance rate.

17. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

providing, by the remote starter application to the insurance underwriting system, an insurance coverage request.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein:

determining the personalized insurance rate by the insurance underwriting system is triggered by receipt of the insurance coverage request.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein:

the insurance coverage request indicates a starting point of a trip and an ending point of the trip.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein:

the personalized insurance rate is determined further based on the starting point of the trip and the ending point of the trip.
