Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a sensor including an elongated member including at least a portion that is electrically conductive. The elongated member includes a sensing layer adapted to react with a material desired to be sensed. An insulating layer surrounds the elongated member. The insulating layer defines at least one access opening for allowing the material desired to be sensed to enter an interior region defined between the elongated member and the insulating layer. The insulating layer has an inner transverse cross-sectional profile that is different from an outer transverse cross-sectional profile of the elongated member. The difference in transverse cross-sectional profiles between the elongated member and the insulating layer provides channels at the interior region defined between the insulating layer and the elongated member. The channels extend generally along the length of the elongated member and are sized to allow the material desired to be sensed to move along the length of the sensor.

Claims

1. An electrochemical sensor comprising:

a tubular body comprising a wall defining a hollow interior;

an elongated body comprising a non-circular transverse cross-sectional profile disposed within the hollow interior, the elongated body being elongated along a length, the elongated body defining a first exterior surface and a second exterior surface that extend along the length of the profiled body, the first exterior surface facing outwardly in a different direction than the second exterior surface;

channels disposed between the first and second exterior surfaces of the elongated body and the wall of the tubular body;

at least one working electrode and a counter electrode, wherein the at least one working electrode is disposed on the first surface of the elongated body;

and

a sensing chemistry disposed within the hollow interior.

2. The electrochemical sensor of claim 1, wherein the tubular body defines an open tip leading to the hollow interior, the open tip being sized to be immersed within an in vivo sample containing an analyte to be sensed.

3. The electrochemical sensor of claim 1, wherein the elongated body includes a dielectric material.

4. The electrochemical sensor of claim 1, wherein the elongated body includes a third exterior surface that faces the hollow interior of the tubular body, the third exterior surface facing outwardly in a different direction than the first and second exterior surfaces.

5. The electrochemical sensor of claim 4, further comprising a working electrode disposed on the third surface of the elongated body and physically separate from the at least one working electron on the first surface of the elongated body.

6. The electrochemical sensor of claim 1, wherein the elongated body separates the hollow interior into channels that are accessible through an open tip, wherein the sensing chemistry is disposed within the channels.

7. The electrochemical sensor of claim 1, further comprising an insulating layer disposed between the elongated body and the counter electrode body.

8. The electrochemical sensor of claim 1, wherein the sensing chemistry is configured to sense glucose.

9. The electrochemical sensor of claim 1, wherein the sensing chemistry is configured to sense lactate.

10. The electrochemical sensor of claim 1, wherein the electrochemical sensor is configured to sense oxygen.

11. An electrochemical sensor comprising:

an elongated, dielectric body elongated along a length and comprising a non-circular transverse cross-section, the elongated, dielectric body defining a first exterior surface and a second exterior surface that extend along the length of the elongated, dielectric body, the first exterior surface facing outwardly in a different direction than the second exterior surface, wherein the elongated, dielectric body is disposed inside a hollow tubular body defined by a wall having a circular transverse cross section;

a working electrode disposed on the first exterior surface of the elongated, dielectric body; and

a channel formed between the first exterior surface and the wall of the hollow tubular body.

12. The electrochemical sensor of claim 11, wherein the elongated, dielectric body has a third exterior surface that extends along the length of the elongated, dielectric body, the third exterior surface facing outwardly in a different direction than the first and second exterior surfaces;

and wherein the electrochemical sensor further comprises an electrode disposed on the third exterior surface of the elongated, dielectric body.

13. A method of sensing an analyte with an electrochemical sensor, the method comprising:

immersing an open tip of an electrochemical sensor in a sample fluid, the electrochemical sensor including a counter electrode and a body that defines the open tip, the sample fluid including an analyte to be sensed;

receiving fluid at the open tip so that the fluid travels along a plurality of channels defined by an elongated body comprising a non-circular transverse cross-section disposed within the counter electrode body;

wetting sensing chemistry disposed along exterior surfaces of the elongated body with the fluid received along the channels, wherein wetting the sensing chemistry causes a chemical reaction at one or more working electrodes disposed on at least one of the exterior surfaces of the elongated body, wherein the fluid electrically connects the counter electrode and the working electrodes; and

measuring current generated at the working electrodes by the chemical reaction.
