1. A method comprising:
- displaying, on a display of an electronic device, an email message in a window;
detecting a first sliding gesture requesting a display of a document enclosed with the email message, the document configured to be opened in a second application,wherein the first sliding gesture begins at an edge of the display and continues in a first direction;
in response to detecting the first sliding gesture, shifting the display of the document into the window in the first direction while reducing the display of the email message in the window along with a movement of the first sliding gesture;
while the first sliding gesture continues;
shifting the display of the document into the window while reducing the display of the email message in the window along with the movement of the first sliding gesture in the first direction until the document covers a width of the window and the email message is shifted out of the window;
shifting the display of the document out of the window while increasing the display of the email message in the window along with the movement of the first sliding gesture in a second direction different from the first direction;
wherein the display of the document comprises a preview of the document in the second application without opening the second application, the preview of the document spanning the width or a length of the window in which the email message is displayed, and wherein, while previewed, the document is viewable but active application functions associated with the second application are not operable other than to display substantially the same information as would be displayed when the second application is opened;
while the document is displayed and the email message is not displayed,receiving a notification of a new email message;
detecting a second sliding gesture to preview an inbox including the new email message;
wherein the second sliding gesture begins at an edge of the display and continues in the second direction opposite to the first direction; and
in response to the second sliding gesture, shifting a display of the inbox and the email message into the window in the second direction while reducing the display of the document, wherein the display of the inbox, the email message, and the document are in a leafed or layered arrangement.
