1. A method comprising:

  • detecting signals via a sensing probe comprising a plurality of electrical conductors, wherein each conductor of the plurality of electrical conductors comprises a plurality of sensing sites, spatially separate combined sensing sites are formed from the plurality of sensing sites by proximate portions of multiple electrical conductors of the plurality of electrical conductors, and no two combined sensing sites are formed by a same combination of electrical conductors, and wherein the detected signals are indicative of neural activity; and

combinatorially unmixing the detected signals to determine a source of the neural activity, wherein a configuration of the plurality of electrical conductors of the sensing probe is application configurable.
