1. A method comprising the steps of:
- coupling an intelligent electronic device (IED) to an electrical distribution system to enable the IED to sense power distributed to a load, the IED configured to operate under a non-file-centric protocol;
enabling the non-file-centric protocol of the IED to support one or more file-centric protocols;
receiving one or more file-centric commands at the IED from an external device, the one or more file-centric commands being supported in the one or more file-centric protocols; and
processing the one or more file-centric commands in the IED in accordance with the non-file-centric protocol, thereby extending the non-file-centric protocol to support the one or more file-centric protocols;
wherein the step of enabling the non-file-centric protocol to support the one or more file-centric protocols comprises the step of extending a non-file-centric command set of the non-file-centric protocol to include the one or more file-centric commands; and
wherein the step of extending the non-file-centric command set further comprises;
embedding the one or more file-centric commands of the one or more file-centric protocol as one or more parameters in the IED, wherein the one or more parameters are embedded in a path and file name of the one or more file-centric commands, wherein the one or more file-centric commands comprise at least one of a request to transfer one or more files stored in a file system of the IED from the IED to the external device, a request to obtain information pertaining to the one or more files stored in the file system of the IED, and a request to perform a file system operation on the one or more files stored in the file system of the IED; and
interpreting the one or more file-centric commands in the IED as a non-file-centric command to perform an operation by the IED.
