1. A device comprising:

  • at least one computer memory that is not a transitory signal and that comprises instructions executable by a processor for;

    transmitting, from a primary display device (PDD), a wireless message containing a value instructing a receiving candidate companion screen device (CCSD) to respond to the message using infrared (IR) transmission, the value instructing a receiving CCSD to respond to the message with a specific response code over IR;

    determining whether a CCSD responds to the message with an IR response message conforming to the specific response code, the PDD being configured for presenting primary content; and

    responsive to determining that the CCSD responds to the message with an IR response message conforming to the specific response code, causing ancillary content related to but different from the primary content to be provided to the CCSD for presentation of the ancillary content thereon, and/or causing a message regarding accessing ancillary content different from the primary content to be provided to the CCSD for presentation of the message thereon.
