1. A method, comprising:

  • inputting information into an application that executes at a consumer electronics device to activate a notification service at a processor of a vehicle, wherein the consumer electronics device is external to the vehicle and associated with an owner of the vehicle;

    in response to receiving an indication that the notification service has been activated at the processor of the vehicle via the application that executes at the consumer electronics device;

    activating a monitoring service, at the processor of the vehicle, that is configured to monitor for indications that any vehicle events specified in notification preferences have occurred while the notification service is activated;

    upon activation of the monitoring service, monitoring via the processor for indications that any vehicle events specified in notification preferences have occurred;

    determining, at the processor based on the notification preferences, whether the vehicle event that has occurred is to trigger an alert message;

    generating an alert message at the processor when the processor determines that the vehicle event that has occurred is to trigger communication of the alert message; and

    communicating the alert message to a remote computer.
