Abstract

The user interface system of the preferred embodiments includes a layer defining a tactile surface and including a first region and a particular region adjacent the first region; a substrate defining a fluid channel, cooperating with the layer at the particular region to define a cavity fluidly coupled to the fluid channel, coupled to the layer at the first region; a displacement device displacing fluid into the fluid channel into the cavity to transition the particular region from a retracted volume setting into an expanded volume setting, the particular region substantially level with the first region in the retracted volume setting and elevated above the first region in the expanded volume setting; and a sensor including a first conductor and a second conductor coupled to the substrate and adjacent the cavity, the first conductor offset from the second conductor and capacitively coupled to the second conductor.

Claims

1. A user interface comprising:

a layer defining a tactile surface and comprising a first region and a particular region adjacent the first region;

a substrate defining a fluid channel, cooperating with the layer at the particular region to define a cavity fluidly coupled to the fluid channel, coupled to the layer at the first region, and disconnected from the layer at the particular region;

a displacement device displacing fluid into the fluid channel into the cavity to transition the particular region from a retracted volume setting into an expanded volume setting, the particular region substantially level with the first region in the retracted volume setting and elevated above the first region in the expanded volume setting;

a sensor comprising a first conductor and a second conductor coupled to the substrate and adjacent the cavity, the first conductor offset from the second conductor and capacitively coupled to the second conductor;

a processor coupled to the sensor, detecting a change from a first capacitance to a second capacitance between the first conductor and the second conductor to determine a transition of the particular region from the retracted volume setting to the expanded volume setting, and detecting a change from the second capacitance to a third capacitance between the first conductor and the second conductor with an input on the particular region in the expanded volume setting.

2. The user interface of claim 1, wherein the processor determines the first capacitance between the first conductor and the second conductor with a first height of fluid within the cavity corresponding to the retracted volume setting;

and wherein the processor determines the second capacitance between the first conductor and the second conductor with a second height of fluid within the cavity corresponding to the expanded volume setting, the second height greater than the first height.

3. The user interface of claim 2, wherein the processor determines the third capacitance between the first conductor and the second conductor with a third height of fluid within the cavity, the third height greater than the first height and less than the second height;

and wherein the processor determines a transition from the second height to the third height with an input on the particular region in the expanded volume setting.

4. The user interface of claim 1, wherein the first conductor is adjacent a first side of the cavity;

wherein the second conductor is arranged on a second side of the cavity substantially opposite the first side of the cavity; and

wherein the first conductor and the second conductor cooperate to generate an electric field across a portion of the cavity.

5. The user interface of claim 1, wherein the first conductor is coupled to the tactile layer proximal the particular region;

wherein a portion of the second region is arranged within the cavity;

wherein the first conductor is offset from the second conductor by a first distance in the retracted volume setting; and

wherein the first conductor is offset from the second conductor by a second distance greater than the first distance in the expanded volume setting.

6. The user interface of claim 1, wherein the processor interprets a first rate of a change from the second capacitance to the third capacitance between the first conductor and the second conductor with an input of a first type on the particular region;

and wherein the processor interprets a second rate of a change from the second capacitance to the third capacitance between the first conductor and the second conductor with an input of a second type on the particular region, the second rate of a change different from the first rate of a change.

7. The user interface of claim 1, further comprising a reservoir containing fluid;

wherein the displacement device displaces fluid from the reservoir into the fluid channel to transition the particular region from the retracted volume setting into the expanded volume setting; and

wherein the displacement device displaces fluid from the fluid channel into the reservoir to transition the particular region from the expanded volume setting into the retracted volume setting.

8. The user interface of claim 1, further comprising a display coupled to the substrate and rendering a visual image through the substrate;

wherein the tactile layer comprises a substantially transparent material;

wherein the substrate comprises a substantially transparent material; and

wherein the volume of fluid comprises a substantially transparent material.

9. The user interface of claim 8, wherein the display renders the visual image corresponding to a virtual key proximal the particular region.

10. The user interface of claim 1:

wherein the particular region defines a first tactile formation over the first region in the expanded volume setting;

wherein the layer comprises a second particular region adjacent the first region;

wherein the substrate defines a second fluid channel, cooperates with the layer at the second particular region to define a second cavity fluidly coupled to the second fluid channel, and disconnected from the layer at the second particular region; and

wherein the displacement device displaces fluid into the second fluid channel toward the second cavity to transition the second particular region from the retracted volume setting into the expanded volume setting, the second particular region substantially level with the first region in the retracted volume setting and elevated above the first region in the expanded volume setting, the second particular region defining a second tactile formation over the first region in the expanded volume setting, the second tactile formation distinct from the first tactile formation.

11. The user interface of claim 10, wherein the displacement device selectively transitions the particular region and the second particular region between the retracted volume setting and the expanded volume setting.

12. The user interface of claim 1, wherein the first conductor is arranged within the substrate at a first depth relative to a base of the cavity;

and wherein the second conductor is arranged within the substrate at a second depth relative to the base of the cavity greater than the first depth.

13. The user interface of claim 1, wherein the particular region defines a slider across the tactile surface in the expanded volume setting.

14. The user interface of claim 13, wherein the sensor comprises a third conductor coupled to the substrate, offset from the second conductor along the slider, and capacitively coupled to the second conductor;

wherein the processor determines a location of an input on the tactile surface proximal the slider based on a change in capacitance between the first conductor and the second conductor over a duration of time and a change in capacitance between the second conductor and the third conductor over the duration of time.

15. A user interface comprising:

a layer defining a tactile surface and comprising a first region and a particular region adjacent the first region;

a substrate defining a fluid channel, cooperating with the layer at the particular region to define a cavity fluidly coupled to the fluid channel, coupled to the layer at the first region, and disconnected from the layer at the particular region;

a displacement device displacing fluid into the fluid channel toward the cavity to transition the particular region from a retracted volume setting into an expanded volume setting, the particular region substantially level with the first region in the retracted volume setting and elevated above the first region in the expanded volume setting;

a sensor comprising a first conductor and a second conductor coupled to the substrate and adjacent the cavity, the first conductor offset from the second conductor and capacitively coupled to the second conductor;

a processor sampling the sensor, detecting a first capacitance between the first conductor and the second conductor with a first height of fluid within the cavity corresponding to the retracted volume setting, and detecting a second capacitance between the first conductor and the second conductor with a second height of fluid within the cavity corresponding to the expanded volume setting.

16. The user interface of claim 15, wherein the processor detects an input on the tactile surface at the deformable region based on a change in capacitance between the first conductor and the second conductor.

17. The user interface of claim 16, wherein the processor interprets a first rate of change in capacitance between the first conductor and the second conductor with an input of a first type on the tactile surface at the particular region;

and wherein the processor interprets a second rate of change in capacitance between the first conductor and the second conductor with an input of a second type on the tactile surface at particular region, the second rate of a change different from the first rate of a change.

18. The user interface of claim 15, wherein the first conductor is coupled to the tactile layer proximal the particular region;

wherein a portion of the second region is arranged within the cavity;

wherein the first conductor is offset from the second conductor by a first distance in the retracted volume setting; and

wherein the first conductor is offset from the second conductor by a second distance greater than the first distance in the expanded volume setting.
