Abstract

Various features and processes related to document collaboration are disclosed. In some implementations, animations are presented when updating a local document display to reflect changes made to the document at a remote device. In some implementations, a user can selectively highlight changes made by collaborators in a document. In some implementations, a user can select an identifier associated with another user to display a portion of a document that includes the other user'"'"'s cursor location. In some implementations, text in document chat sessions can be automatically converted into hyperlinks which, when selected, cause a document editor to perform an operation.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

presenting an editable document in a first window on a computing device, wherein the editable document is configured to be edited collaboratively by at least one other computing device;

receiving a message from one of the at least one other computing device;

presenting the message in a second window on the computing device;

determining that the message in the second window includes at least one word associated with a function of a document editor on the computing device;

converting the at least one word into a selectable link that, when activated, performs the document editor function on the editable document of the first window on the computing device; and

presenting the message and the selectable link in the second window on the computing device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a selection on the computing device that executes the selectable link; and

performing the document editor function on the editable document after receiving the selection.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein performing the document editor function causes the document editor to display at least one of a particular portion of the editable document and a document editing tool.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the selectable link is encoded as a hyper link.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the message comprises a chat message presented within the document editor.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the selectable link is presented in the second window using special formatting, highlighting, or both.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the document editor function comprises a go to page function.

8. The method of claim 1, where the document editor function corresponds to a menu item and performing the document editor function comprises invoking the menu item.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the menu item comprises one of an insert menu item, and open menu item or a format menu item.

10. A non-transitory computer-readable medium including instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

present an editable document in a first window on a computing device, wherein the document is configured to be edited collaboratively by at least one other computing device;

receive a message from at one of the at least one other computing device;

present the message in a second window on the computing device;

determine that the message in the second window includes at least one word associated with a function a document editor on the computing device;

convert the at least one word into a selectable link that, when activated, performs the document editor function on the editable document of the first window on the computing device; and

present the message and the selectable link in the second window on the computing device.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

receive a selection input on the computing device that executes the selectable link; and

perform the document editor function on the editable document after receiving the selection input.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11, wherein the instructions to cause the one or more processors to perform the document editor function comprise instructions to cause the one or more processors to display the one or more portions of the editable document and a document editing tool.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the selectable link is encoded as a hyperlink.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the message is a chat window presented within the document editor.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the document editor function comprises a go to page function performed by the document editor.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the selectable link is presented in the second window using special formatting, highlighting, or both.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10, where the document editor function corresponds to a menu item and performing the document editor function comprises invoking the menu item.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17, wherein the menu item comprises one of an insert menu item, and open menu item or a format menu item.

19. A system comprising:

a display;

one or more processors operatively coupled to the display; and

a computer-readable medium operatively coupled to the one or more processors and including instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to;

present, on the display, an editable document in a first window of a computing device, wherein the editable document is configured to be edited collaboratively by at least other computing device;

receive a message from one of the at least one other computing device;

present, on the display, the message in a second window of the computing device;

determine that the message in the second window includes at least one word associated with a function of a document editor application on the computing device;

convert the at least one word into a selectable link that, when activated, performs the document editor function on the editable document of the first window on the computing device; and

present, on the display, the message and the selectable link in the second window of the computing device.

20. The system of claim 19, further comprising instructions to cause the one or more processors to:

receive a selection input on the computing device that executes the selectable link; and

perform the document editor function on the editable document in response to receiving the selection input.

The system of claim 20, wherein the instructions to cause the one or more processors to perform the document editor function comprise instructions to cause the one or more processors to display, on the display, at least one of a particular page of the editable document and a document editing tool.

22. The system of claim 19, wherein the selectable link is encoded as a hyperlink.

23. The system of claim 19, wherein the message comprises a chat message presented within the document editor application.

24. The system of claim 19, wherein the selectable link is presented in the second window using special formatting, highlighting, or both.

25. The system of claim 19, wherein the document editor function comprises a go to page function.

26. The system of claim 19, where the document editor function corresponds to a menu item and performing the document editor function comprises invoking the menu item.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein the menu item comprises one of an insert menu item, and open menu item or a format menu item.
