Abstract

A method, system, and device provide power-efficient communications within the context of available power. Transmission and receipt data rates are scalable in accordance with output power available from a power source. Data is transmitted at a data rate determined, at least in part, by the available output power.

Claims

1. A power-efficient communication device, comprising:

a transmitter with a data transmission rate determined, at least in part, by output power from an electrical power source that is available to the transmitter,

where the transmitter in operation minimizes a ratio of peak-to-average power consumption of available output power from the electrical power source used in transmitting data in order to maximize energy consumption of the available output power from the electrical power source per unit time and

where responsive to a determined present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source the transmitter is operable to draw from the electrical power source no more power than the present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source.

2. The device of claim 1, where the transmitter receives the present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source from the electrical power source.

3. The device of claim 1, where the transmitter further comprises:

an electrical power monitoring circuit operable to monitor the power sourcing ability of the electrical power source to determine the present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source.

4. The device of claim 1, where the device is a transceiver further comprising:

a receiver operable to receive data at a data reception rate determined, at least in part, by the output power available from the electrical power source,

where responsive to the determined present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source the receiver is operable to draw from the electrical power source no more power than the present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source.

5. The device of claim 4, where the transceiver further comprises:

an electrical power monitoring circuit operable to monitor the power sourcing ability of the electrical power source to determine the present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source.

6. The device of claim 1, where the electrical power source is self-monitoring and the transmitter is operable to receive the present power sourcing ability from an electrical power monitoring circuit of the electrical power source that monitors the output power of the electrical power source.

7. The device of claim 1, where the transmitter further comprises:

an electrical power monitoring circuit operable to monitor the power sourcing ability of the electrical power source to determine the present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source.

8. The device of claim 1, where the transmitter is operable to draw from the electrical power source no more power than a power rating of the electrical power source known to the transmitter.

9. A power-efficient communication device, comprising:

a transmitter with a data transmission rate determined, at least in part, by output power from an electrical power source that is available to the transmitter,

where the transmitter in operation minimizes a ratio of peak-to-average power consumption of available output power from the electrical power source used in transmitting data in order to maximize energy consumption of the available output power from the electrical power source per unit time and where the transmitter is operable to draw from the electrical power source no more power than a power rating of the electrical power source known to the transmitter.

10. The device of claim 9, where the device is a transceiver further comprising:

a receiver operable to receive data at a data reception rate determined, at least in part, by the output power available from the electrical power source

where the power rating of the electrical power source is known to the receiver and the receiver is operable to draw from the electrical power source no more power than the power rating of the electrical power source.

11. The device of claim 10, where the receiver is operable to draw from the electrical power source no more power than a present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source determined by monitoring the electrical power source.

12. The device of claim 9, where the transmitter is operable to draw from the electrical power source no more power than a present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source determined by monitoring the electrical power source.

13. The device of claim 12, where the transmitter further comprises:

an electrical power monitoring circuit operable to monitor the power sourcing

ability of the electrical power source to determine the present power sourcing

ability of the electrical power source.

14. A method of power-efficient communications, comprising:

determining a present power sourcing ability of an electrical power source;

transmitting data at a data transmission rate determined, at least in part, by the available output power, where in transmitting data a ratio of peak-to-average power consumption of available output power from the electrical power source used in transmitting data is minimized in order to maximize energy consumption of the available output power from the electrical power source per unit time; and

in transmitting data, a transceiver drawing from the electrical power source no more power than the present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source and no more power than a power rating of the electrical power source.

15. The method of claim 14, where determining the present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source comprises:

the transceiver receiving from the electrical power source the present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source.

16. The method of claim 14, where determining the present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source comprises:

an electrical power monitoring circuit monitoring the power sourcing ability of the electrical power source.

17. A wireless transmitting system, comprising:

an electrical power source, capable of producing an output power;

a transceiver configured to have a data transmission rate determined, at least in part, by the available output power and receiving data at a data reception rate determined, at least in part, by the available output power;

a controller coupled to the transceiver that controls the transceiver to keep the power drawn by the transceiver from the electrical power source less than the determined available output power and to maximize consumption of the determined available output power by the transceiver,

where the transceiver is controlled by the controller to draw from the electrical power source no more power than a present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source and no more power than a power rating of the electrical power source known to the transceiver.

18. The system of claim 17, where the system further comprises:

an electrical power monitoring circuit coupled to the electrical power source, the controller and the transceiver, the electrical power monitoring circuit operable to monitor the electrical power source and determine the present power sourcing ability of the electrical power source.

19. The system of claim 18, where the electrical power monitoring circuit is part of the electrical power source and the electrical power source is self-monitoring, and where the electrical power source transmits to the transceiver its present power sourcing ability.
