1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

  • arranging a plurality of components of a user interface on a screen of an electronic device in a hierarchy, the hierarchy having one or more layers and each layer having at least one of the components of the user interface; and

    presenting the user interface according to a structure of the hierarchy, comprising;

    displaying a background component on a first layer of the user interface, the background component covering the entirety of the screen;

    displaying a plurality of content items of a plurality of content types on a second layer of the user interface that overlays the first layer, the second layer including a second background component different from the background component of the first layer below the second layer and the plurality of content types on the second layer partially covering the second background component of the second layer; and

    in response to a user selecting a first content-type icon to filter the plurality of content types by a first content type, displaying an animation sequence in which one or more first content items of the plurality of content items that are of the first content type remain displayed on the user interface and all other content items of other content types, including at least one or more second content items of the plurality of content items that are of a second content type different from the first content type are removed while maintaining the display of the background component on the first layer, the first content-type icon representing the first content type,wherein the animation sequence comprises all the other content items including the second content items visually disappearing from the user interface and exposing a portion of the second background component of the second layer previously thereunder the disappearing content items before the one or more first content items move, while maintaining a same orientation, on the screen from a first displayed position to a second displayed position on the user interface initially covering at least a portion of the second background component of the second layer initially exposed after the disappearing of all the other content items on the second layer after all the other content items including the second content items disappear before covering substantially all of the second background component, the second displayed position being different from the first displayed position.
