1. A vital-signs patch in a patient monitoring system, the patch comprising:

  • a patch housing configured for attaching to the skin of a patient and containing;

    a plurality of electrodes in contact with the skin of the patient to measure a plurality of physiological parameters of the patient;

    a radio configured to selectably transmit and receive on more than one frequency; and

    a processor operably connected to the radio, the processor;

    configuring a radio that can be configured to transmit and receive on more than one frequency to operate at a selected frequency, the selected frequency determined from a stored list of frequencies;

    listening on the selected frequency to determine an amplitude of radio noise at the selected frequency;

    comparing the amplitude of the radio noise to a threshold value;

    when the amplitude of the radio noise is greater than the threshold value, determining a new frequency from the stored list of frequencies and repeating the steps of configuring, listening and comparing at the new frequency prior to initiating transmission on the new frequency;

    when the amplitude of the radio noise is below the threshold value, using the selected frequency for initiating the transmission to a receiving device; and

    switching the transmission to a selected other frequency in response to sending a confirmation of a command received on the selected frequency from the receiving device that commands the processor to switch to the selected other frequency.
