Abstract

Systems and methods for managing data, such as metadata or indexes for index databases. In one exemplary method, different processing priorities are assigned to different indexing tasks based upon the origin of the task. In another exemplary method, indexing tasks are processed in a first mode when a data processing system is in a first power state and indexing tasks are processed in a second mode when the data processing system is in a second power state.

Claims

1. A machine implemented method of processing data using one or more processors, the method comprising:

receiving requests for a plurality of indexing operations to index one or more files, wherein the requested indexing operations are required as a result of one of either a first occurrence or a second occurrence;

grouping the requested indexing operations into a first indexing queue and a second indexing queue based on whether the requested indexing operations are required as a result of the first occurrence or the second occurrence, wherein the requested indexing operations required as a result of the first occurrence are grouped into the first indexing queue and the requested indexing operations required as a result of the second occurrence are grouped into the second indexing queue; and

performing the requested indexing operations in the first indexing queue at a first priority and the requested indexing operations in the second indexing queue at a second priority different than the first priority.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the requests result from notifications that one or more files have been added or changed and wherein the first indexing, queue is for files of a first user and the second indexing queue is for files of a second user.

3. The method as in claim 1 further comprising performing indexing operations from the second indexing queue for no more than a predetermined period of time after a last user action.

4. The method as in claim 1, wherein the first priority is higher than the second priority.

5. The method as in claim 1 wherein the requests result from notifications that one or more files have been added or were changed.

6. The method as in claim 1 wherein the first occurrence is a user driven change of one or more files and the second occurrence corresponds to a request generated by a background operation.

7. The method as in claim 6 wherein input/output requests for non-indexing tasks are given higher priority than the first priority and the second priority.

8. The method as in claim 1 wherein priority of indexing is controlled by a power state of a system which performs the method and wherein the power state includes a battery'"'"'s state and a heat level of the system.

9. A non-transitory machine readable medium providing instructions which when executed by a data processing system cause the data processing system to perform a method of processing data, the method comprising:

receiving requests for a plurality of indexing operations to index one or more files, wherein the requested indexing operations are required as a result of one of either a first occurrence or a second occurrence;

grouping the requested indexing operations into a first indexing queue and a second indexing queue based on whether the requested indexing operations are required as a result of the first occurrence or the second occurrence, wherein the requested indexing operations required as a result of the first occurrence are grouped into the first indexing queue and the requested indexing operations required as a result of the second occurrence are grouped into the second indexing queue; and

performing the requested indexing operations in the first indexing queue at a first priority and the requested indexing operations in the second indexing queue at a second priority different than the first priority.

10. The medium as in claim 9 further comprising performing indexing operations from the second indexing queue for no more than a predetermined period of time after a last user action.

11. The medium as in claim 9, wherein the first priority is higher than the second priority.

12. The medium as in claim 9 wherein the requests result from notifications that one or more files have been added or were changed.

13. The medium as in claim 9 wherein the first occurrence is a user driven change of one or more files and the second occurrence corresponds to a request generated by a background operation.

14. The medium as in claim 13 wherein input/output requests for non-indexing tasks are given higher priority than the first priority and the second priority.

15. The medium as in claim 9 wherein priority of indexing is controlled by a power state of a system which performs the method and wherein the power state includes a battery'"'"'s state and a heat level of the system.

16. The medium of claim 9 wherein the requests result from notifications that one or more files have been added or changed and wherein the first indexing queue is for files of a first user and the second indexing queue is for files of a second user.

17. A machine implemented method for processing data using one or more processors, the method comprising:

receiving requests for a plurality of indexing operations to index one or more files, wherein the requested indexing operations are required as a result of one of either a first occurrence or a second occurrence; and

performing the requested indexing operations in a first indexing queue before the requested indexing operations in a second indexing queue, wherein the requested indexing operations are grouped in the first indexing queue based on being required as a result of the first occurrence and the requested indexing operations are grouped in the second indexing queue based on being required as a result of the second occurrence.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the requests result from notifications that one or more files have been added or created or were changed.

19. The method of claim 17 wherein the first occurrence is a user driven change of one or more files and the second occurrence corresponds to a request generated by a background operation.

20. The method of claim 17 wherein input/output requests for non-indexing tasks are given higher priority than indexing tasks associated with the first and the second indexing queues.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein priority of indexing is controlled by a power state of a system which performs the method and wherein the power state includes a battery'"'"'s state and a heat level of the system.

22. The method as in claim 17, wherein when performing indexing operations required as a result of the second occurrence, indexing is performed for no more than a predetermined period of time after a last user action.

23. A non-transitory machine readable medium providing instructions which when executed by a data processing system cause the data processing system to perform a method for processing data, the method comprising:

receiving requests for a plurality of indexing operations to index one or more files, wherein the requested indexing operations are required as a result of one of either a first occurrence or a second occurrence; and

performing the requested indexing operations in a first indexing queue before the requested indexing operations in a second indexing queue, wherein the requested indexing operations are grouped in the first indexing queue based on being required as a result of the first occurrence and the requested indexing operations are grouped in the second indexing queue based on being required as a result of the second occurrence.

24. The medium of claim 23 wherein the requests result from notifications that one or more files have been added or created or were changed.

25. The medium of claim 23 wherein the first occurrence is a user driven change of one or more files and the second occurrence corresponds to a request generated by a background operation.

26. The medium of claim 23 wherein input/output requests for non-indexing tasks are given higher priority than indexing tasks associated with the first and the second indexing queues.

27. The medium of claim 26 wherein priority of indexing is controlled by a power state of a system which performs the method and wherein the power state includes a battery'"'"'s state and a heat level of the system.

28. The medium as in claim 23, wherein when performing indexing operations required as a result of the second occurrence, indexing is performed for no more than a predetermined period of time after a last user action.
