A vehicle node configured for use in a vehicular communications network which provides for exchange of data between a plurality of vehicle nodes and a plurality of stationary nodes, where each stationary node comprises a computing unit operable to broadcast periodic announcements of services, and to receive identity messages from the vehicle node on at least one common IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) channel, said vehicle node comprising:
- at least one on-board computing unit which is operable to broadcast identity messages to, and to receive identity messages from, a plurality of neighboring vehicle nodes on at least one roadway, the received identity messages enabling said vehicle node to identify, to locate, and to list the plurality of neighboring vehicle nodes, the at least one on-board computing unit also being operable over a high frequency channelized RF band, compliant with IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol specification for ad-hoc networking, the identity messages being broadcast from said at least one on-board computing unit on an assigned channel common to the plurality of neighboring vehicle nodes and at an interval of at least several times per second effective for collision avoidance,said each vehicle node being operable to detect transition of the vehicle to another vehicle neighborhood by;
interacting with a stationary node to discover whether a different channel is currently assigned for broadcasting identity messages; and
monitoring identity messages on a plurality of channels, until said each vehicle node determines that the plurality of neighboring vehicle nodes are using a different channel to broadcast identity messages,wherein spectrum utilization is optimized by assigning channel usage to different vehicle neighborhoods according to conditions on the roadway.

Method and apparatus whereby one or more vehicle nodes are configured for use in a vehicular communications network which provides for exchange of data between a plurality of vehicle nodes and a plurality of stationary nodes, where each stationary node comprises a computing unit operable to broadcast periodic announcements of services, and to receive identity messages from the vehicle node on at least one common IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) channel. Preferably, each stationary node is configured to provide for exchange of data with the plurality of vehicle nodes, where each vehicle node comprises at least one on-board computing unit which is operable to broadcast identity messages to and to receive service announcements from the stationary node on the at least one common IEEE 802.11 MAC channel.

A stationary node configured for use in a vehicular communications network which provides for exchange of data with a plurality of vehicle nodes, where each vehicle node comprises at least one on-board computing unit which is operable to broadcast identity messages to and to receive service announcements from the stationary node on at least one common IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) channel, said stationary node comprising:

at least one computing unit operable to (i) communicate with the plurality of vehicle nodes over a high frequency channelized RF band, compliant with IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol specification for ad-hoc networking, (ii) broadcast periodic announcements of services, and (iii) to receive identity messages from the plurality of vehicle nodes on at least one common IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) channel within said RF band, the identity messages being broadcast from said at least one on-board computing unit of at least one of said plurality of vehicle nodes on an assigned channel common to the plurality of neighboring vehicle nodes and at an interval of at least several times per second for effective collision avoidance, said each stationary node being operable to optimize spectrum utilization by; assigning channel usage to different vehicle neighborhoods according to conditions on the roadway; using periodic broadcast announcements to inform the plurality of neighboring vehicle nodes that a different channel is currently assigned for broadcasting identity messages; and monitoring identity messages on a plurality of channels, in order to verify that all vehicle nodes are broadcasting on the correct channel assigned to their neighborhood. - View Dependent Claims (17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26)
