1. A non-transitory tangible medium containing instructions executed by one or more processors for communicating with a network device, the instructions causing the one or more processors to:

  • provide a communication protocol on a host computer for exchanging a series of messages between the host computer and a network device,initiate communication with the network device,receive an acknowledgement from the network device,request a self-describing data dictionary comprising one or more data definitions,receive the self-describing data dictionary,update the communication protocol on the host computer with the self-describing data dictionary,receive data from the network device through the communication protocol on the host computer, andprocess the data according to the one or more data definitions, wherein the series of messages between the host computer and the network device are classified with a hierarchal classification scheme according to the data definitions in the self-describing data dictionary, wherein the hierarchal classification scheme comprises a first level representing a family of physiological information, a second level defining a semantic identity associated with the physiological information, and a third level representing a specific action associated with the physiological information.
