1. A hip joint navigation system, comprising:

  • a jig having an anchor portion configured to be immovably connected to the pelvis, the jig having a connector;

    a landmark acquisition probe coupled with the connector, the connector configured to move in at least two degrees of freedom relative to the jig, the landmark acquisition probe configured to move in at least one additional degree of freedom relative to the connector;

    a first inertial navigation device configured to be immovably connected to the jig; and

    a second inertial navigation device configured to determine the orientation of the landmark acquisition probe when the landmark acquisition probe is moved to touch an anatomical landmark,wherein the first inertial navigation device, the second inertial navigation device, or the first inertial navigation device and the second inertial navigation device comprises software incorporated into a processor configured to calculate the orientation of an anatomical plane based on data from at least one of the first inertial navigation device and the second inertial navigation device.
