Abstract

A keyless entry device includes a user interface configured to receive an input from a user of the device; a haptic output device configured to generate a haptic effect to the user; and a processor configured to receive a command based on the input from the user through the user interface, to communicate the command to another entity, to receive information from the another entity, and to output a control signal to a drive circuit coupled to the haptic output device to cause the haptic output device to generate the haptic effect to the user based on the information received from the another entity.

Claims

1. A keyless entry device comprising:

a user interface configured to receive an input from a user of the device;

a haptic output device configured to generate different haptic effects to the user;

a tangible machine-readable storage medium storing a control signal table that maps haptic effects vehicle information using a plurality of control signals, each control signal causing a haptic effect; and

a processor configured to;

generate a command based on the input from the user through the user interface,

communicate the command to a vehicle over a communication channel,

receive a response that does not confirm receipt of the command from the vehicle over the communication channel, the response including vehicle information unrelated to the command,

decode the vehicle information,

select a control signal from the control signal table based on the decoded vehicle information, and

output the control signal to a drive circuit coupled to the haptic output device to cause the haptic output device to periodically or continuously generate the haptic effect mapped to the vehicle information.

2. The keyless entry device according to claim 1, wherein the keyless entry device comprises a cellular communication device.

3. The keyless entry device according to claim 2, wherein the cellular communication device comprises a cellular telephone.

4. The keyless entry device according to claim 1, wherein the user interface is further configured to generate an output to the user.

5. The keyless entry device according to claim 4, wherein the output to the user comprises a visual effect displayed on a touch screen.

6. The keyless entry device according to claim 5, wherein the visual effect comprises text.

7. The keyless entry device according to claim 4, wherein the user interface comprises an audio speaker and wherein the output to the user comprises an audio effect.

17. The keyless entry device of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to establish the communication channel with the vehicle.

18. The keyless entry device of claim 17, wherein, if the communication channel is not established, the processor is further configured to generate a haptic effect that conveys a failure to establish the communication channel with the vehicle.

22. The keyless entry device of claim 1, wherein the vehicle information includes maintenance information, warning information, response information, or proximity information.

25. The keyless entry device of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to deactivate the control signal in response to receiving an acknowledgement through the user interface.

28. The keyless entry device of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to temporarily deactivate the control signal for a predetermined time.

8. A method for a keyless entry device having a memory storing a control signal table that maps haptic effects to vehicle information using a plurality of control signals, each control signal causing a haptic effect, the method comprising:

generating a command based on an input from a user through a user interface of the keyless entry device;

communicating the command to a vehicle over a communication channel;

receiving a response that does not confirm receipt of the command from the vehicle over the communication channel, the response including vehicle information unrelated to the command;

decoding the vehicle information;

selecting a control signal from the control signal table based on the decoded vehicle information; and

outputting the control signal to a drive circuit coupled to a haptic output device of the keyless entry device to cause the haptic output device to periodically or continuously generate the haptic effect mapped to the vehicle information.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the keyless entry device comprises a cellular communication device.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the cellular communication device comprises a cellular telephone.

11. The method of claim 8, wherein the user interface is configured to generate an output to the user.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the output to the user comprises a visual effect displayed on a touch screen.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the visual effect comprises text.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the user interface comprises an audio speaker and wherein the output to the user comprises an audio effect.

15. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

establishing the communication channel with the vehicle.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein, if the communication channel is not established, the method further comprises generating a haptic effect that conveys a failure to establish the communication channel with the vehicle.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13, wherein the instructions, when executed by a processor, further cause the keyless entry device to establish the communication channel with the vehicle.

21. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 20, wherein, if the communication channel is not established, the instructions, when executed by a processor, further cause the keyless entry device to generate a haptic effect that conveys a failure to establish the communication channel with the vehicle.

23. The method of claim 8, wherein the vehicle information includes maintenance information, warning information, response information, or proximity information.

26. The method of claim 8, wherein the processor is further configured to deactivate the control signal in response to receiving an acknowledgement through the user interface.

29. The method of claim 8, wherein the processor is further configured to temporarily deactivate the control signal for a predetermined time.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor of a keyless entry device having a memory storing a control signal table that maps haptic effects to vehicle information using a plurality of control signals, each control signal causing a haptic effect, cause the keyless entry device to:

generate a command based on an input from a user through a user interface of the keyless entry device;

communicate the command to a vehicle over a communication channel;

receive a response that does not confirm receipt of the command from the vehicle over the communication channel, the response including vehicle information unrelated to the command;

decode the vehicle information;

select a control signal from the control signal table based on the decoded vehicle information; and

output the control signal to a drive circuit coupled to a haptic output device of the keyless entry device to cause the haptic output device to periodically or continuously generate the haptic effect mapped to the vehicle information.

24. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein the vehicle information includes maintenance information, warning information, response information, or proximity information.

27. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein the processor is further configured to deactivate the control signal in response to receiving an acknowledgement through the user interface.

30. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein the processor is further configured to temporarily deactivate the control signal for a predetermined time.
