Abstract

A light trapping optical cover employing an optically transparent layer with a plurality of light deflecting elements. The transparent layer is configured for an unimpeded light passage through its body and has a broad light input surface and an opposing broad light output surface. The light deflecting elements deflect light incident into the transparent layer at a sufficiently high bend angle with respect to a surface normal and direct the deflected light toward a light harvesting device adjacent to the light output surface. The deflected light is retained by means of at least TIR in the system formed by the optical cover and the light harvesting device which allows for longer light propagation paths through the photoabsorptive layer of the device and for an improved light absorption. The optical cover may further employ a focusing array of light collectors being pairwise associated with the respective light deflecting elements.

Claims

1. An optical structure, comprising:

a layer of optically transmissive material defined by a first broad area surface and an opposing second broad area surface extending parallel to said first surface;

an optically absorptive layer disposed in contact with said second surface and in an energy exchange relationship with said layer of optically transmissive material; and

a plurality of light deflecting elements distributed within said layer of optically transmissive material;

wherein each of the plurality of said light deflecting elements is configured to deflect a light ray propagating transversally through said layer of optically transmissive material away from a surface normal so as to form a propagation angle of said light ray with respect to said surface normal, above a predefined critical angle, and wherein said predefined critical angle is selected to result in a multiple transversal passage of light through said optically absorptive layer.

2. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said first broad area surface is configured for light input and generally unimpeded light passage towards the second broad area surface.

An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said layer of optically transmissive material is configured for a generally unimpeded light passage into said optically absorptive layer through a direct contact and index-matched optical coupling between said second broad area surface and a light receiving surface of the optically absorptive layer.

4. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said layer of optically transmissive material extends broadly and continuously both longitudinally and laterally and has a thickness that is substantially less than the other two dimensions.

5. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein a thickness of a light absorbing material of said optically absorptive layer is less than a minimum thickness sufficient for absorbing substantially all of incident light in a single pass at a normal incidence.

6. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said predefined critical angle is defined by an angle of a total internal reflection characterizing said first broad area surface.

7. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said light deflecting elements are disposed in discreet locations and spaced apart from each other by predetermined distances.

8. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said optically absorptive layer comprises a plurality of photovoltaic cells distributed over an area of said layer.

9. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein an area of said optically absorptive layer approximates an area of said layer of optically transmissive material.

An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said optically absorptive layer includes a reflective surface opposing a surface of contact of said optically absorptive layer with said layer of optically transmissive material, and said reflective surface is configured to reflect light by means of a total internal reflection.

11. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said optically absorptive layer includes a reflective surface opposing a surface of contact of said optically absorptive layer with said layer of optically transmissive material, and said reflective surface is mirrored.

12. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, further comprising an array of light collecting elements configured for focusing light onto said light deflecting elements.

13. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, further comprising a linear lens array, wherein said plurality of light deflecting elements is disposed in an energy receiving relationship with respect to said linear lens array.

14. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said plurality of light deflecting elements comprises a parallel array of linear prismatic grooves formed in either first or second broad area surface.

15. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein at least one of said plurality of light deflecting elements comprises a high aspect ratio cavity formed in either the first broad area surface or the second broad area surface.

16. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein at least one of said plurality of light deflecting elements comprises a discontinuity in either the first broad area surface or the second broad area surface.

17. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein a cumulative light receiving aperture of said light deflecting elements is less than an area of the first and second broad-area surfaces.

18. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein at least one of said plurality of light deflecting elements comprises a linear groove formed within said layer of optically transmissive material and a linear lens aligned parallel to a longitudinal axis of said linear groove.

19. An optical structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said optically absorptive layer comprises a photoreactor configured to contain a light-absorbing liquid.
