Abstract

Disclosed are the use of fluorine substituted olefins, including tetra- and penta-fluoropropenes, in a variety of applications, including in methods of depositing catalyst on a solid support, methods of sterilizing articles, cleaning methods and compositions, methods of applying medicaments, fire extinguishing/suppression compositions and methods, flavor formulations, fragrance formulations and inflating agents.

Claims

1. A method for providing a system for cooling air in an automobile comprising:

(a) providing in the automobile a vapor compression air conditioning system having at least one compressor and at least one condenser; and

(b) providing a heat transfer composition in said system, said heat transfer composition consisting essentially of;

(i) at least about 70% by weight of a refrigerant;

(1) having no substantial acute toxicity as measured by inhalation exposure to mice and rats;

(2) having a global warming potential of not greater than 150; and

(3) comprising a fluoroalkene consisting essentially of 1, 3, 3, 3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234ze), wherein said HFO-1234ze comprises at least about 97% by weight of transHFO-1234ze; and

(ii) lubricant consisting essentially of polyalkylene glycol(s) and/or polyol ester(s).

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said lubricant is present in the heat transfer composition in an amount of from about 5% to about 30% by weight.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said heat transfer composition has one liquid phase over the temperature range of from about −

40°

C. to about +60°

C.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said heat transfer composition has one liquid phase over the temperature range of from about −

30°

C. to about +50°

C.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein said heat transfer composition has one liquid phase over the temperature range of from about −

40°

C. to about +60°

C.

6. The method of claim 2 wherein said heat transfer composition has one liquid phase over the temperature range of from about −

30°

C. to about +50°

C.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein said refrigerant comprises at least about 70% by weight of said HFO-1234ze and wherein said HFO-1234ze consists of transHFO-1234ze.

8. The method of claim 4 wherein said refrigerant further comprises one or more of:

difluoromethane (HFC-32);

pentafluoroethane (HFC-125);

1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134);

1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a);

difluoroethane (HFC-152a);

1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane (HFC-227ea);

1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane (HFC-236fa);

1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane (HFC-245fa);

1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane (HFC-365mfc);

CO2; and

combinations of any two or more of these.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein said lubricant consists essentially of polyalkylene glycol(s).

10. The method of claim 8 wherein said lubricant consists essentially of polyol ester(s).

11. The method of claim 1 wherein said refrigerant further comprises one or more of:

difluoromethane (HFC-32);

pentafluoroethane (HFC-125);

1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134);

1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a);

difluoroethane (HFC-152a);

1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane (HFC-227ea);

1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane (HFC-236fa);

1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane (HFC-245fa);

1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane (HFC-365mfc);

CO2; and

combinations of any two or more of these.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein said lubricant consists essentially of polyalkylene glycol(s).

13. The method of claim 11 wherein said lubricant consists essentially of polyol ester(s).

14. The method of claim 1 wherein said lubricant is present in the heat transfer composition in an amount of about 10% to about 30% by weight.

15. A method of conditioning the air in an automobile using an automobile air conditioning system including at least one compressor, at least one condenser and at least one evaporator, said method comprising:

(a) utilizing in said system a heat transfer composition consisting essentially of;

(i) at least about 70% by weight of a refrigerant;

(1) having no substantial acute toxicity as measured by inhalation exposure to mice and rats;

(2) having a global warming potential of not greater than 150; and

(3) comprising a fluoroalkene consisting essentially of 1, 3, 3, 3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234ze), wherein said HFO-1234ze comprises at least about 97% by weight of transHFO-1234ze; and

(ii) lubricant consisting essentially of polyalkylene glycol oil(s) and/or polyol ester(s); and

(b) removing heat from said refrigerant by condensing at least a portion of said refrigerant in said condenser at a temperature that includes about 150°

F.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein said lubricant is present in the heat transfer composition in an amount of from about 5% to about 30% by weight of said lubricant.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein said heat transfer composition has one liquid phase over the temperature range of from about −

40°

C. to about +60°

C.

18. The method of claim 15 wherein said heat transfer composition has one liquid phase over the temperature range of from about −

30°

C. to about +50°

C.

19. The method of claim 15 wherein said refrigerant further comprises one or more of:

difluoromethane (HFC-32);

pentafluoroethane (HFC-125);

1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134);

1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a);

difluoroethane (HFC-152a);

1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane (HFC-227ea);

1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane (HFC-236fa);

1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane (HFC-245fa);

1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane (HFC-365mfc);

CO2; and

combinations of any two or more of these.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein said lubricant consists essentially of polyalkylene glycol(s).

21. The method of claim 19 wherein said lubricant consists essentially of polyol ester(s).

22. The method of claim 15 wherein said refrigerant comprises at least about 70% by weight of said HFO-1234ze and wherein said HFO-1234ze consists of transHFO-1234ze.

23. The method of claim 22 wherein said refrigerant further comprises one or more of:

difluoromethane (HFC-32);

pentafluoroethane (HFC-125);

1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134);

1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a);

difluoroethane (HFC-152a);

1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane (HFC-227ea);

1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane (HFC-236fa);

1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane (HFC-245fa);

1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane (HFC-365mfc);

CO2; and

combinations of any two or more of these.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein said lubricant consists essentially of polyalkylene glycol(s).

25. The method of claim 23 wherein said lubricant consists essentially of polyol ester(s).
