Abstract

A self-adjusting microbot pigging system for cleaning the interior of a pipe, the system comprises a plurality of microbots, each microbots comprises a propulsion device and a programmable computer processor operatively associated with the propulsion device, each of said processors programmed to instruct its associated propulsion device to operate in cooperation with one or more of the other microbot propulsion devices of said plurality of microbots to form a pig in the pipe.

Claims

1. A microbot pigging system for cleaning the interior of a pipe, the system comprising:

a. a plurality of microbots, each microbot in said plurality of microbots comprising an automated attachment mechanism that releasably attaches said microbot to at least one other of said plurality of microbots;

b. a drive adapted to urge the plurality of microbots through the pipe; and

c. a programmable computer processor having computer executable instructions, the computer processor being operatively associated with and thereby controlling one or more of the attachment mechanisms;

wherein the computer processor is programmed to instruct at least one of the attachment mechanisms of one or more of the plurality of microbots to attach to at least one other of the plurality of microbots to collectively form a pig within the pipe.

2. The pigging system of claim 1, wherein the computer processor instructs a plurality of the attachment mechanisms to attach the plurality of microbots together in a particular orientation to collectively form a pig having a configuration determined by the computer processor.

3. The pigging system of claim 1, wherein one of said plurality of microbots comprises a propulsion device, the propulsion device urging said microbot in at least one direction.

4. The pigging system of claim 3, wherein the computer processor is operatively associated with and is programmed to control the propulsion device.

5. The pigging system of claim 3, wherein the propulsion device urges the one of said plurality of microbots to attach to at least one other of said plurality of microbots.

The pigging system of claim 1, further comprising a dimensional sensor in communication with the computer processor, the dimensional sensor mapping an interior contour of the pipe in proximity to the pig and communicating a signal to the computer processor indicative of the interior contour being mapped by the sensor.

7. The pigging system of claim 1, wherein the attachment mechanism of at least one of said plurality of microbots releasably attaches said microbot in more than one orientation to another of said plurality of microbots.

8. The pigging system of claim 7, wherein the computer processor is operatively associated with and programmed to instruct the attachment mechanism to attach said one microbot in an orientation determined by the computer processor.

The pigging system of claim 8, further comprising a dimensional sensor in communication with the computer processor, the dimensional sensor mapping an interior contour of the pipe and communicating a signal to the computer processor indicative of the interior contour being mapped by the sensor, the computer processor instructing the attachment mechanisms to attach the plurality of microbots together into a pig having a shape that complements the interior contour of the pipe in proximity to the pig.

The pigging system of claim 1, wherein the attachment mechanism of one of said plurality of microbots releasably attaches said one microbot in a first orientation to second of said plurality of microbots and releasably attaches said one microbot in a second orientation to a third of said plurality of microbots.

11. The pigging system of claim 1, wherein the computer processor is operatively associated with and thereby able to operate the drive to controllably urge the plurality of microbots through the pipe at the instruction of the computer processor.

12. The pigging system of claim 1, wherein the drive comprises one or more of fluid pressure, a shaft, a chain or a cable.

13. The pigging system of claim 1, wherein the microbots collectively attach to one another to form the pig into a shape having at least one contour that complements at least one contour of the pipe interior.

14. The pigging system of claim 1, wherein at least one of said plurality of microbots comprises a computer processor having computer executable instructions, the microbot processor being operatively associated with the computer processor.

15. A self-adjusting microbot pigging system for cleaning the interior of a pipe, the system comprising a plurality of microbots, each microbot of said plurality of microbots comprising a propulsion device and an attachment mechanism configured to releasably attach said microbot to a different microbot of said plurality of microbots when both said microbots are positioned within a predetermined distance of each other, each microbot of said plurality of microbots further comprising a programmable computer processor operatively associated with the propulsion device and the attachment mechanism of said microbot, each of said computer processors being programmed to instruct its associated propulsion device to move said microbot into proximity to a different microbot of said plurality of microbots and to controllably attach said two microbots together.

The pigging system of claim 15, further comprising a control system external to said plurality of microbots and operatively associated with and adapted to control the propulsion device of one microbot of said plurality of microbots to urge said one microbot in a direction determined by the control system.

17. The pigging system of claim 16, wherein the control system comprises a programmable master computer processor operatively associated with and programmed to control the programmable computer processor of said one microbot to externally operate the propulsion device of said one microbot.

The pigging system of claim 15, further comprising a control system external to said plurality of microbots and operatively associated with and adapted to control said the attachment mechanism of one of said plurality of microbots to releasably attach said one microbot to another microbot of said plurality of microbots as determined by the control system.

The pigging system of claim 18, further comprising a master programmable computer processor operatively associated with and being programmed to control the programmable computer processor of said one microbot of said plurality of microbots to externally operate the attachment mechanism of said one microbot.

The pigging system of claim 19, wherein the master computer processor is further programmed to control the programmable computer processor of said one microbot to externally operate the propulsion device of said one microbot to urge said one microbot in a direction determined by the control system.

21. The pigging system of claim 15, wherein said attachment mechanisms releasably attach the plurality of microbots together to form a pig within the pipe.

22. The pigging system of claim 21, further comprising a drive, the drive configured to urge the pig through the pipe.

23. The pigging system of claim 15, wherein the plurality of microbots are programmed to form a pig having shape that complements the interior of the pipe in proximity to the pig.

24. The pigging system of claim 23, wherein plurality of microbots dynamically change the shape of the pig to complement the interior contours of the pipe in response to changes in the interior shape of the pipe in proximity to the pig as the pig is urged through the pipe.
