Abstract

An ambulatory rescalable encoding monitor recorder and a method for monitor recorder-implemented rescalable encoding are provided. An encoding table comprising a plurality of codes and a range of electrocardiographic values associated with each of the codes is maintained. Electrocardiographic values are sensed by the monitor recorder during a sequence of temporal windows. The values are processed, the processing including: calculating a difference between a maximum one and a minimum one of the values in each of the windows; comparing each of the differences to an at least one threshold; based on the comparison of the difference for at least one of the windows, adjusting table; encoding each of the values with one of the codes using the table, wherein the adjusted table is used for the encoding of the values in the at least one window; and writing each of the codes into a sequence into the recorder memory.

Claims

1. A system for providing dynamic gain over filtered electrocardiographic data with the aid of a digital computer, comprising:

a download station configured to execute code comprising;

a value module configured to obtain a time series of a plurality of voltage values that comprises a digital representation of a raw electrocardiography (“

ECG”

) signal recorded by an ambulatory monitor recorder;

a filter module configured to mark one or more of the values as noise by applying one or more noise filters to the time series;

an identification module configured to identify one or more segments of the ECG signal comprising a plurality of the values that have not been marked as the noise, each of the segments falling within a temporal window, and to calculate a difference between a maximum one of the values and a minimum one within each of the windows; and

a gain module configured to use the differences for each of the windows to determine a gain factor for the values in all of the windows.

2. A system according to claim 1, wherein one of the filters is a high pass filter and the download station further comprises:

a high-pass module configured to mark substantially 120 seconds of the signal are marked as the noise following a triggering of the high pass filter.

3. A system according to claim 1, wherein one of the filters is a low pass filter and the download station further comprises:

a triggering module configured to trigger the low pass filter when supra-20 mV peak-to-peak voltages are detected; and

a marking module configured to mark a span of substantially 60 seconds of the signal as the noise, 30 seconds preceding and 30 seconds following the triggering of the low pass filter.

4. A system according to claim 1, wherein one of the filters is an amplitude change filter and the download station further comprises:

a triggering module configured to trigger the amplitude change filter when peak-to-peak voltage strengths of adjoining spans of the signal of substantially three seconds change by at least 300% in strength; and

a marking module configured to mark a span of substantially 30 seconds as noise, starting from the triggering of the amplitude change filter.

5. A system according to claim 1, wherein one of the filters is zero-crossings filter and the download station further comprises:

a triggering module configured to trigger the zero-crossings filter when the voltage of the signal crosses zero more than ten times in one second; and

a marking module configured to mark a span of substantially 15 seconds of the signal as the noise, starting from the triggering of the zero-crossings filter.

6. A system according to claim 1, the download station further comprising:

a bridging module configured to bridge the identified signal to create a continuous ECG signal for display.

7. A system in accordance with claim 1, the download station further comprising:

a representation module configured to statistically represent a correlation between the differences for all of the window, wherein the gain factor places the correlation substantially between 2 mV and 10 mV.

8. An ambulatory rescalable encoding monitor recorder, comprising:

a memory configured to store an encoding table comprising a plurality of codes and a range of electrocardiographic values associated with each of the codes;

a micro-processor configured to sense electrocardiographic values during a sequence of temporal windows and to process the electrocardiographic values within each of the windows, the processing comprising;

calculate a difference between a maximum one and a minimum one of the electrocardiographic values in each of the temporal windows;

compare each of the differences to an at least one threshold;

based on the comparison of the difference for at least one of the windows, adjust the ranges within the table;

encode each of the electrocardiography values with one of the codes using the table, wherein the adjusted table is used for the encoding of the values in the at least one window; and

write each of the codes into a sequence in a non-volatile memory of the monitor recorder.

9. An ambulatory rescalable encoding monitor recorder according to claim 8, wherein the adjusted table is used for the encoding of one or more other ones of the windows occurring later in the sequence than the at least one window.

10. An ambulatory rescalable encoding monitor recorder according to claim 8, wherein the at least one threshold is adjusted when the table is adjusted.

11. An ambulatory rescalable encoding monitor recorder according to claim 8, wherein each of the ranges is defined by a maximum and a minimum value, the micro-processor further configured to:

calculate a further difference between the at least one threshold and the difference for one of the windows; and

compare the further difference to one of the maximum values, wherein the table and the one threshold are adjusted when the further difference exceeds the one maximum value.

12. An ambulatory rescalable encoding monitor recorder according to claim 11, wherein each of the ranges is defined by a maximum and a minimum value, the micro-processor further configured to:

associate the message regarding the further difference adjustment with the table.

13. An ambulatory rescalable encoding monitor recorder according to claim 8, the micro-processor further configured to:

define a length of each of the temporal windows and an acceptable peak-to-peak threshold associated with that window, wherein the at least one threshold comprises the peak-to-peak threshold.

14. A method for monitor recorder-implemented rescalable encoding, comprising:

maintaining in a memory of a monitor recorder an encoding table comprising a plurality of codes and a range of electrocardiographic values associated with each of the codes;

sensing by the monitor recorder electrocardiographic values during a sequence of temporal windows;

processing by the monitor recorder the electrocardiographic values within each of the windows, the processing comprising;

calculating a difference between a maximum one and a minimum one of the electrocardiographic values in each of the temporal windows;

comparing each of the differences to an at least one threshold;

based on the comparison of the difference for at least one of the windows, adjusting the ranges within the table;

encoding each of the electrocardiography values with one of the codes using the table, wherein the adjusted table is used for the encoding of the values in the at least one window; and

writing each of the codes into a sequence into the memory of the monitor recorder.

15. A method according to claim 14, wherein the adjusted table is used for the encoding of one or more other ones of the windows occurring later in the sequence than the at least one window.

16. A method to claim 14, wherein the at least one threshold is adjusted when the table is adjusted.

17. A method according to claim 14, wherein each of the ranges is defined by a maximum and a minimum value, further comprising:

calculating a further difference between the at least one threshold and the difference for one of the windows; and

comparing the further difference to one of the maximum values, wherein the table and the one threshold are adjusted when the further difference exceeds the one maximum value.

18. A method according to claim 14, wherein each of the ranges is defined by a maximum and a minimum value, further comprising:

associating the message regarding the further difference adjustment with the table.

19. A method according to claim 14, further comprising:

defining a length of each of the temporal windows and an acceptable peak-to-peak threshold associated with that window, wherein the at least one threshold comprises the peak-to-peak threshold.

20. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing code for executing on the monitor recorder to perform the method according to claim 14.
