1. A two-wheeled robot for scanning RAID transponders comprising:

  • a counterbalance located below the axles of the two wheels movable fore and aft relative to a body of the robot;

    a UHF antenna configured to form a directional beam pattern;

    the antenna mounted for rotation about an axis;

    a shaft encoder configured to measure the angle of rotation of the antenna;

    an RFID interrogator connected to the antenna; and

    a controller connected to the RFID interrogator,wherein the controller is configured to cause the RFID interrogator to transmit commands and listen for backscattered replies from RFID transponders as the antenna rotates and enable orientation in a wide range of angles relative to the tagged merchandize, giving the tags a view from many different angles while maintaining a focused beam of RF energy on the transponder population of interest.
