1. A system for preserving, resuscitating or evaluating a human or human-compatible lung ex vivo in a functioning and viable state comprising:

  • a ventilation machine for ventilating the lung ex vivo;

    a container for holding said lung and keeping said lung in communication with a fluid media, wherein the fluid media comprises a preservation solution;

    a perfusion circuit comprising;

    a first fluid line in fluid communication with said lung configured to deliver said fluid media to at least one major vessel of said lung when the lung is held in the container;

    a second fluid line in fluid communication with the container configured to carry said fluid media away from said lung;

    a heater, a cooler, or both, configured to maintain the temperature of said lung at a temperature of greater than 25°

    C. to about 37°

    C.;

    a gas exchange device configured to controllably alter a composition of a first gas component in the fluid media;

    a pump configured to control the flow rate of at least a portion of said fluid media; and

    wherein said ventilation machine, said first fluid line, said second fluid line, said heater and/or cooler, said oxygenator and said pump for preserving, resuscitating or evaluating said lung in a functioning and viable state.
