1. A server of a push-to-talk (PTT) system comprising:
- a processor; and
a non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing programming for execution by the processor, the programming including instructions to;
receive a call session initiation request from a first handset to establish a call session between the first handset and a plurality of second handsets;
in response to the call session initiation request, determine whether the plurality of second handsets is available for the call session as a whole in accordance with one or more criteria;
in response to a determination that the plurality of second handsets is available for the call session as a whole, establish the call session between the first handset and the plurality of second handsets; and
in response to a determination that the plurality of second handsets is not available for the call session as a whole, not establish the call session between the first handset and the plurality of second handsets, wherein the call session between the first handset and the plurality of second handsets is not established when at least one second handset of the plurality of second handsets is available for the call session and the plurality of second handsets is not available for the call session as a whole.

23. A method comprising:
-
transmitting, by a client on a first handset registered with a push-to-talk (PTT) system, a call session initiation request to a server of the PTT system requesting a call session between the first handset and a plurality of second handsets; and in response to a determination that the plurality of second handsets is available for the call session as a whole, receiving, by the client, a floor grant for the call session between the first handset and the plurality of second handsets, wherein the call session between the first handset and the plurality of second handsets is not established when at least one second handset of the plurality of second handsets is available for the call session and the plurality of second handsets is not available for the call session as a whole, and wherein whether the plurality of second handsets is available for the call session as a whole is determined in accordance with one or more criteria. - View Dependent Claims (24, 25, 26)
