Abstract

The present disclosure describes embodiments of a patient monitoring system and methods that include the measure and display of hemoglobin statistics. In an embodiment, total hemoglobin trending is displayed over a period of time. Statistics can include frequency domain analysis, which may be unique for each patient monitored. The total hemoglobin trending and/or statistics can further be used to help control the treatment of a patient, such as being used to control IV administration.

Claims

1. A method of controlling a treatment unit, the method comprising:

controlling one or more light emitters configured to transmit optical radiation towards a tissue site of a patient;

receiving attenuated optical radiation from the tissue site of the patient corresponding to the transmitted optical radiation;

determining a first plurality of hemoglobin measurements from the received attenuated optical radiation;

applying pattern detection rules on the determined first plurality of hemoglobin measurements; and

transmitting a control signal to a treatment unit based on an output of the applied pattern detection rules on the determined first plurality of hemoglobin measurements,

wherein the pattern detection rules comprise comparing the first plurality of hemoglobin measurements with a baseline measurement.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the pattern detection rules comprise a frequency transform.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the pattern detection rules comprise determining a change in the first plurality of hemoglobin measurements over time.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the control signal is configured to change an operation of a dialysis machine.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the operation comprises:

alter processing of blood, inject drugs, turn off, and turn on.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising transmitting the determined first plurality of hemoglobin measurements to the treatment unit.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the control signal is configured to change an operation of an intravenous fluid administration unit.

8. A system for controlling a treatment unit, the system comprising:

one or more light emitters configured to transmit optical radiation towards a tissue site of a patient;

one or more detectors configured to detect attenuated optical radiation from the tissue site of the patient corresponding to the transmitted optical radiation; and

a patient monitor comprising one or more hardware processors configured to;

determine a first plurality of hemoglobin measurements from the detected attenuated optical radiation;

apply pattern detection rules on the determined first plurality of hemoglobin measurements; and

transmit a control signal to a treatment unit based on an output of the applied pattern detection rules on the determined first plurality of hemoglobin measurements,

wherein the pattern detection rules comprise comparing the first plurality of hemoglobin measurements with a baseline measurement.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the pattern detection rules comprise a frequency transform.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein the pattern detection rules comprise determining a change in the first plurality of hemoglobin measurements over time.

11. The system of claim 8, further comprising a dialysis machine and wherein the control signal is configured to change an operation of the dialysis machine.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the operation comprises:

alter processing of blood, inject drugs, turn off, and turn on.

13. The system of claim 8, wherein the control signal comprises the determined first plurality of hemoglobin measurements to the treatment unit.

14. The system of claim 8, further comprising an intravenous fluid administration unit and wherein the control signal is configured to change an operation of an intravenous fluid administration unit.

15. The system of claim 8, wherein the control signal comprises a measurement from the applied pattern detection rules on the determined first plurality of hemoglobin measurements.

16. A method of controlling a treatment unit, the method comprising:

controlling one or more light emitters configured to transmit optical radiation towards a tissue site of a patient;

receiving attenuated optical radiation from the tissue site of the patient corresponding to the transmitted optical radiation;

determining a first plurality of hemoglobin measurements from the received attenuated optical radiation;

applying pattern detection rules on the determined first plurality of hemoglobin measurements; and

transmitting a control signal to a treatment unit based on an output of the applied pattern detection rules on the determined first plurality of hemoglobin measurements,

wherein the control signal is configured to change an operation of a dialysis machine.

17. A method of controlling a treatment unit, the method comprising:

controlling one or more light emitters configured to transmit optical radiation towards a tissue site of a patient;

receiving attenuated optical radiation from the tissue site of the patient corresponding to the transmitted optical radiation;

determining a first plurality of hemoglobin measurements from the received attenuated optical radiation;

applying pattern detection rules on the determined first plurality of hemoglobin measurements; and

transmitting a control signal to a treatment unit based on an output of the applied pattern detection rules on the determined first plurality of hemoglobin measurements,

wherein the control signal is configured to change an operation of an intravenous fluid administration unit.
