1. A robotic system comprising:
- a) robot;
b) a plurality of processors operational for processing data in a manner so as to cause the robot to interact with its environment in a life-like manner, wherein the life-like manner includes facial expressions and at least one of the processors is local to the robot;
c) communication circuitry for allowing the robot and the local processor to bi-directionally communicate with a processor remotely located from the robot such that the environmental interaction is a result of data processed at least in part by the remotely located processor; and
d) a sentience simulator operational for processing data in a manner so as to cause the robot to interact with its environment with at least one of apparent motives, intentions, and creativity,wherein the sentience simulator includes interconnected components comprising;
a response module;
a theorizer including a theory maker, human theories, object theories, world theories, and a theory tester interconnected together;
a data analysis and fusion module;
a mood system; and
a content module, including segmented text, expressions, animations, phonemes, and prosody interconnected together.

Abstract
A system and method for controlling animated characters. The system involves an animated character mapping perception into a number of domains, including a world domain, linguistic domain and social domain. The system is computationally perceived items that should be abstracted from the character'"'"'s environment for processing. The animated character is able to utilize different levels of information gathering or learning, different levels of decision making, and different levels of dynamic responses to provide life-like interactions.
