Abstract

A method includes monitoring an activity stream to identify actions that match stored sponsored story specifications, for providing one or more sponsored stories to a viewing user. The sponsored story specifications include a visual specification for the sponsored story, and matched sponsored stories are ranked for a viewing user. Users can set privacy preferences related to sponsored stories. The ranking and privacy settings contribute to which sponsored stories are provided for display to the viewing user.

Claims

1. A computer-readable memory storing a computer program executable by a processor, the computer program producing a user interface, the user interface comprising:

a sponsored story specification selection control, the sponsored story specification selection control providing a plurality of options for selecting a sponsored story specification for generating a sponsored story in an online social networking system, the sponsored story comprising promoting a story selected from an organic activity stream of stories in the online social networking system;

an entity selection control for receiving a user selection of a target entity, the selected target entity for use as a first criterion in generating a new sponsored story specification;

an interaction selection control for receiving a user selection of an interaction, the selected interaction for use as a second criterion in generating the new sponsored story specification, and the selected interaction comprising information about an action associated with the entity that can be taken by a user of the online social networking system;

a selectable save control that, when selected by a user, generates a new sponsored story specification, the new sponsored story specification specifying the first and second criteria for identifying, from the organic activity stream of stories in the online social networking system, one or more stories describing the selected interaction taken on the selected target entity in the online social networking system; and

a selectable activation control for receiving a user request to activate the new sponsored story specification, the activated new sponsored story specification used by the online social networking system to identify one or more stories in the organic activity stream of stories to be selected as sponsored content.

2. The computer program of claim 1, further comprising an executable process that responds to user selection of the selectable activation control module to activate a sponsored story.

3. The computer program of claim 1, the user interface further comprising a destination selection control module for selecting a location for displaying a sponsored story specified by the sponsored story specification.

4. The computer program of claim 1, the user interface further comprising computer code for rendering a preview area providing a preview of the sponsored story for display.

5. The computer program of claim 1, wherein the sponsored story comprises an advertisement.

6. The computer program of claim 1, wherein the entity comprises a business, an individual, a television show, an application, or a physical location.

7. The computer program of claim 1, wherein the interaction comprises liking an item, posting a page, posting a link, updating a status, commenting on an item, or checking in at a location.

8. The computer program of claim 1, wherein the action associated with the entity is taken by a user on a third-party system outside of the online social networking system.

9. A method comprising:

providing for display a plurality of options for selecting a sponsored story specification for generating a sponsored story in an online social networking system, the sponsored story comprising promoting a story selected from an organic activity stream of stories in the online social networking system;

receiving, from the plurality of options, selection of a request to create a new sponsored story specification;

providing for display one or more entities in the online social networking system for use in generating the sponsored story specification related to one of the entities;

receiving a first user input selecting a target entity from the one or more entities as a first criterion for the sponsored story specification;

providing for display one or more interactions for use in generating the sponsored story specification, each interaction comprising information about a user action with the selected entity taken in the online social networking system;

receiving a second user input selecting a target interaction comprising a user action with the selected entity taken in the online social networking system as a second criterion for the sponsored story;

generating, by a computer processor, a new sponsored story specification, the sponsored story specification specifying the first and second criteria for identifying, from the organic activity stream of stories in the online social networking system, one or more stories describing the selected interaction taken on the selected target entity in the online social networking system; and

receiving input activating the new sponsored story specification.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the sponsored story comprises an advertisement.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the entity comprises a business, an individual, a television show, an application, or a physical location.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein the interaction comprises posting a page, posting a link, updating a status, commenting on an item, or checking in at a location.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein the one or more interactions are available for selection depending on the selected entity.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein the one or more actions that can be taken by users are taken on a third-party system outside of the online social networking system.

15. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium containing computer program code for performing the steps:

providing for display a plurality of options for selecting a sponsored story specification for generating a sponsored story in an online social networking system, the sponsored story comprising promoting a story selected from an organic activity stream of stories in the online social networking system;

providing for display one or more entities in the online social networking system for use in generating the sponsored story specification related to one of the entities;

receiving a first user input selecting a target entity from the one or more entities as a first criterion for the sponsored story specification;

providing for display one or more interactions for use in generating the sponsored story specification, each interaction comprising information about a user action with the selected entity taken in the online social networking system;

receiving a second user input selecting a target interaction comprising a user action with the selected entity taken in the online social networking system as a second criterion for the sponsored story;

generating, by a computer processor, a new sponsored story specification, the sponsored story specification specifying the first and second criteria for identifying, from the organic activity stream of stories in the online social networking system, one or more stories describing the selected interaction taken on the selected target entity in the online social networking system; and

receiving input activating the new sponsored story specification.

16. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the sponsored story comprises an advertisement.

17. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the entity comprises a business, an individual, a television show, an application, or a physical location.

18. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the interaction comprises posting a page, posting a link, updating a status, commenting on an item, or checking in at a location.

19. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the one or more interactions are available for selection depending on the selected entity.

20. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the one or more actions that can be taken by users are taken on a third-party system outside of the online social networking system.
