1. A method for using a volume of a patient'"'"'s whole blood to close a subcutaneous arterial wound in the patient, the method comprising:

  • introducing a catheter percutaneously into an artery of the patient;

    locating an external wall of an artery comprising the subcutaneous arterial wound;

    providing a porous matrix;

    homogenously exposing the patient'"'"'s whole blood to the porous matrix to initiate a clotting cascade in the whole blood;

    situating the patient'"'"'s whole blood at a position proximate the wound as the patient'"'"'s whole blood is clotting;

    removing the catheter from the artery as the patient'"'"'s whole blood is clotting; and

    holding a subcutaneous mass comprising the patient'"'"'s whole blood in position proximate the arterial wound as the patient'"'"'s whole blood continues to clot;

    whereby a hemostatic closure comprising the patient'"'"'s whole blood is formed.
