Abstract

A vacuum cleaner comprises a cleaning head having a suction nozzle adapted to be moved along a surface to be cleaned, and a hair collection assembly provided on the cleaning head and having a hair collection element adapted to collect hair from the surface to be cleaned as the cleaning head moves along the surface to be cleaned.

Claims

1. A vacuum cleaner comprising:

a cleaning head having a cleaning head housing and a suction nozzle adapted to be moved along a surface to be cleaned in a first direction and in a second direction opposite the first direction; and

a hair collection assembly provided on the cleaning head and adapted to collect hair from the surface to be cleaned as the cleaning head moves along the surface to be cleaned, the hair collection assembly comprising;

a hair collection element adapted to collect hair from the surface to be cleaned and comprising a curved face and a plurality of projections extending from the curved face;

a rotatable coupling between the hair collection element and the cleaning head housing, such that the hair collection element is rotatable relative to the suction nozzle between a first orientation and a second orientation that is different than the first orientation, wherein contact between the plurality of projections extending from hair collection element and the surface to be cleaned is greater in the first orientation than in the second orientation; and

a height adjustment mechanism for selecting the type of surface to be cleaned by adjusting the height of the hair collection element relative to the suction nozzle, the height adjustment mechanism comprising a control knob for selecting the type of surface to be cleaned;

wherein the plurality of projections are configured to frictionally engage the surface to be cleaned when the cleaning head is moved along the surface to be cleaned in the first and second directions to rotate the hair collection element between the first and second orientations;

wherein the hair collection element is configured to dig against the surface to be cleaned to collect hair when the cleaning head is moved along the surface to be cleaned in the first direction and the hair collection element is in the first orientation; and

wherein the hair collection element is configured to skim over the surface to be cleaned to release collected hair when the cleaning head is moved along the surface to be cleaned in the second direction and the hair collection element is in the second orientation.

2. The vacuum cleaner from claim 1, wherein the cleaning head housing comprises an agitator chamber formed at a forward portion thereof, which houses an agitator assembly for agitating the surface to be cleaned.

3. The vacuum cleaner from claim 2, wherein the hair collection assembly is positioned within the agitator chamber, forwardly of the agitator assembly.

4. The vacuum cleaner from claim 3, wherein the suction nozzle is formed at a lower portion of the agitator chamber.

5. The vacuum cleaner from claim 1, wherein the cleaning head housing comprises a chamber formed at a forward portion thereof, wherein the suction nozzle is formed at a lower portion of the chamber.

6. The vacuum cleaner from claim 5, wherein the hair collection assembly is positioned within the chamber.

7. The vacuum cleaner from claim 6, wherein the rotatable coupling comprises a shaft mounting the hair collection element within the chamber.

8. The vacuum cleaner from claim 7, wherein the height adjustment mechanism further comprises a cam and a cam follower coupled with the shaft, wherein movement of the control knob moves the cam relative to the cam follower.

9. The vacuum cleaner from claim 8, wherein the cam comprises a cam curve portion provided on the control knob and the cam follower comprises a rod that extends from the shaft toward the control knob and engages the cam curve portion.

10. The vacuum cleaner from claim 8, wherein the hair collection element is biased away from the suction nozzle by a spring attached between the hair collection element and the cleaning head housing.

11. The vacuum cleaner from claim 7, wherein the hair collection element comprises a bar rotatably coupled to the shaft.

12. The vacuum cleaner from claim 11, wherein the bar comprises the curved face.

13. The vacuum cleaner from claim 1, wherein the control knob comprises a user-engageable portion which extends exteriorly of the cleaning head housing and a cam curve portion formed opposite the user-engageable portion.

14. The vacuum cleaner from claim 13, wherein the height adjustment mechanism further comprises a rod operably coupled between the cam curve portion and the hair collection element.

15. The vacuum cleaner from claim 14, wherein the rod is fixed to or integrally formed with the hair collection element so that that the hair collection element will be forced towards or lifted away from the surface to be cleaned when the control knob is rotated accordingly.
