Abstract

Computerized information processing methods for processing data from a medical device, such as an ingestible probe. In one embodiment, the method includes processing data obtained by the probe so as to produce a plurality of image frames, and further processing the frames to identify a plurality of frames of potential interest to a reviewer based on at least an evaluation of portions of the frame(s) such as pixels or groups of pixels, and using the identified frames to form a preview of the entire data set. In one implementation, the processing of the data includes processing of pixel intensity and/or color (which can be correlated to various physiologic conditions) to help identify the frames of potential interest.

Claims

1. A method of processing data derived from a sensor disposed on a autonomous intestinal probe, said data having been generated while said probe moved autonomously through the intestinal tract of a living being and in response to exposure of a portion of the intestinal tract with electromagnetic radiation having a first wavelength, the method comprising:

receiving the data at a computerized device comprising a display device, a processor and at least one computer program configured to run on the processor; and

processing at least a portion of said received data using at least said processor and said at least one computer program, said processing comprising;

evaluating the at least a portion using said at least one computer program to identify at least a first portion of the received data that is likely of most interest to a human reviewer, the identification based at least in part on analysis of a plurality of image portions associated with the data; and

presenting at least some of said first portion to the human reviewer via the display device as a preview.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein:

said evaluating is performed automatically by said at least one computer program; and

said sensor comprises a visual band sensor, and said analysis of said plurality of image portions comprises evaluation of an intensity level associated with each of a plurality of pixels of said at least portion of said received data.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said evaluation of an intensity level associated with each of a plurality of pixels comprises evaluation of a color level associated with the plurality of pixels.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein said evaluation of a color level associated with the plurality of pixels comprises evaluation of at least one of an R-G-B (Red-Green-Blue) intensity.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein said evaluation of a color level associated with the plurality of pixels comprises evaluation to identify one or more known physiologic conditions associated with an intestinal tract of a human being.

The method of claim 1, wherein said identification based at least in part on analysis of a plurality of image portions associated with the data comprises identification of a first image portion comprising a first intensity, and a second image portion contiguous with the first image portion and comprising a second intensity different from the first intensity.

The method of claim 1, wherein said analysis of a plurality of image portions associated with the data comprises analysis of intensity values associated with a plurality of pixels corresponding to a first tissue portion within the intestinal tract, and analysis of intensity values associated with a plurality of pixels corresponding to a second tissue portion contiguous with the first tissue portion.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein said analysis of a plurality of image portions comprises applying one or more mathematical algorithms to determine at least one border or interface between said first tissue portion and said second tissue portion.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein:

analysis of a plurality of image portions associated with the data comprises analysis of data for a plurality of identically sized image regions; and

said evaluation comprises identifying one or more characteristic shapes associated with one or more known physiologic conditions of an intestinal tract of a human, the identifying based at least in part on a multi-nodal spatial analysis of the received data.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein:

said processing at least a portion of said received data comprises generating a plurality of frames from said at least portion of said received data; and

said analysis of a plurality of image portions associated with the data comprises analysis of a plurality of pixels associated with at least one of said frames for prescribed patterns of variations in intensity.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein said presenting said first portion via the display device comprises displaying a plurality of said frames associated with said first portion simultaneously in different regions of the display device.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein said presenting said first portion via the display device comprises displaying sequences of two or more temporally contiguous frames in respective ones of different regions of the display device.

The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying a user interface having video viewing functions comprising an image enhancement function selectable by the reviewer, on said display device contemporaneous with said presenting, said image enhancement function selected from the group consisting of:

(i) enhanced image viewing quality; and

(ii) enhanced image viewing resolution; and

wherein said at least one computer program further comprises an annotation function selectable by the reviewer, the annotation function enabling the reviewer to annotate at least a portion of said presented first portion.

The method of claim 1, wherein said processing at least a portion of said received data using at least said processor and said at least one computer program further comprises, subsequent to said presenting said first portion to the human reviewer via the display device, presenting via the display device at least some of the evaluated at least portion of the received data which was not included within the first portion.

A method of processing data derived from a sensor disposed on a autonomous intestinal probe, said data having been generated while said probe moved autonomously through the intestinal tract of a living being, the method configured to enhance an efficiency of review of the data by a human reviewer, the method comprising:

receiving the data at a computerized device comprising a display device, a processor, and at least one computer program configured to run on the processor; and

processing at least a portion of said received data using at least said processor and said at least one computer program, said processing comprising;

generating a plurality of frames from said at least portion of said received data;

processing a plurality of pixels associated with at least some of said plurality of frames using said at least one computer program to select a subset of said plurality of frames that are likely to be of most interest to the reviewer, said selection of the subset based at least in part on said processing identifying a plurality of pixels having a prescribed characteristic; and

generating a display on the display device, the display comprising at least a portion of said subset of frames displayed simultaneously in respective ones of different regions of a display region of the monitor.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein said selection of a subset of said plurality of frames that are likely to be of most interest to the reviewer comprises selection by said at least one computer program without input from said reviewer.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein said prescribed characteristic comprises a prescribed level of the intensity of the identified plurality of pixels relative to other spatially pixels contiguous therewith in one or more of said frames.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein said identifying a plurality of pixels having a prescribed characteristic comprises identifying:

(i) a first region of a particular frame having a first plurality of pixels of a first intensity characteristic, and (ii) a second region of the particular frame having a second plurality of pixels of a second intensity characteristic; and

wherein said processing further comprises;

identifying an artifact of interest based at least in part on said identification of said first and second regions within said particular frame; and

selecting one or more frames temporally contiguous to said particular frame for display with the particular frame.

19. A method of processing data derived from a sensor disposed on a swallowable intestinal probe, said data having been generated while said probe moved through the intestinal tract of a living being, the method comprising:

receiving the data at a computerized device comprising a processor and at least one computer program configured to run on the processor; and

processing at least a portion of said received data using at least said processor and said at least one computer program, said processing comprising;

generating a plurality of frames from said at least portion of said received data;

using said at least one computer program to analyze said plurality of frames to identify a subset of said plurality of frames of potential interest to a user of the computerized device, the identification of the subset based at least in part on recognition of a prescribed pattern of pixel intensity or color in at least one of the frames of the subset; and

generating a display on a monitor associated with the computerized device, the display comprising at least a portion of said subset of frames displayed in a sequence.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein:

the generating a display provides the user with a preview of the data, the preview providing the user with said plurality of frames of potential interest in a automatic fashion so as to permit the user to identify regions of said intestinal tract on which to focus their analysis; and

the prescribed pattern of pixel intensity or color corresponds to one or more maladies or diseases known to afflict a human'"'"'s intestinal tract.
