Abstract

Wireless power transmission (WPT) systems are provided. According to an embodiment, the WPT system uses one or more power transmitting coils and a receiver for electromagnetically coupled wireless power transfer. The electrodynamic receiver can be in the form of an electrodynamic transducer where a magnet is allowed to oscillate near a receiving coil to induce a voltage in the receiving coil, a piezoelectric transducer where the magnet causes a vibrating structure with a piezoelectric layer to move, an electrostatic transducer where movement of the magnet causes a capacitor plate to move, or a combination thereof. An alternating magnetic field from the transmitting coil(s) excites the magnet in the receiver into mechanical resonance. The vibrating magnet then functions similar to an energy harvester to induce voltage/current on an internal coil, piezoelectric material, or variable capacitor. Embodiments utilize magnetic coupling and electromechanical resonance for safe, spatially distributed, low-frequency power delivery to portable devices.

Claims

1. A wireless power transfer system, comprising:

a transmitter generating an external magnetic field; and

a receiver generating electrical power under an influence of the external magnetic field by electromechanical conversion, wherein the receiver comprises;

a magnet that moves via electrodynamic coupling under the influence of the external magnetic field, and

an electromechanical conversion element coupled to the magnet,

wherein the electromechanical conversion element comprises a receiving coil,

wherein movement of the magnet induces a voltage in the receiving coil, and

wherein the receiver is configured such that the movement of the magnet comprises translational motion relative to the receiving coil.

2. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the receiving coil is formed from one or more metal layers of a substrate.

3. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein a substrate comprises an aperture disposed at an inner portion of the receiving coil, and wherein the magnet is disposed within the aperture and connected to the substrate via one or more springs.

4. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the magnet and receiving coil are positioned such that the magnet moves in an axial direction of the receiving coil.

5. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, comprising a spring attached to the magnet to allow the magnet to oscillate with respect to the receiving coil, and

wherein a magnetization direction of the magnet is in a plane parallel to a displacement direction of the spring.

6. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, comprising a beam to which the magnet is attached at one end to allow the magnet to oscillate with respect to the receiving coil, and

wherein a magnetization direction of the magnet is in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the beam.

7. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the electromechanical conversion element further comprises at least one of the following:

a piezoelectric material, wherein movement of the magnet causes mechanical stress upon the piezoelectric material; and

a variable capacitor, wherein the magnet is connected to a plate of the variable capacitor, wherein movement of the magnet moves the plate of the variable capacitor.

8. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the transmitter comprises one or more transmitter coils.

9. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the external magnetic field generated by the transmitter is time-varying.

10. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 9, wherein the external magnetic field generated by the transmitter is a sinusoidal varying field at the mechanical resonance frequency of the receiver.

11. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the receiver is configured to allow for being spaced at least a centimeter away from the transmitter.

12. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the receiver is configured to allow for being spaced at least a meter away from the transmitter.

13. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the receiver is configured to allow for being spaced at least a kilometer away from the transmitter.

14. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the electromechanical conversion element is connected to a sensor or device at a sensor node.

15. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the receiver is fabricated using silicon fabrication technology.

16. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the magnet comprises a permanent magnet.

17. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 16, further comprising one or more soft magnets for shaping, concentrating, or guiding the external magnetic field from the transmitter to the magnet.

18. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the magnet is a soft magnet.

19. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the magnet comprises at least two permanent magnets.

20. The wireless power transfer system according to claim 1, wherein the receiver is connected to a medical device or a personal or industrial portable electronic device.

21. A method of wireless power transfer, comprising:

generating and transmitting a time-varying magnetic field at a first frequency using a first transmitter; and

generating electrical power in a receiver comprising a magnet by allowing the magnet of the receiver to move due to an influence of a magnetic force generated by the magnetic field from the transmitter, the movement of the magnet influencing an electromechanical conversion element in the receiver,

wherein the electromechanical conversion element comprises a receiving coil,

wherein the magnet of the receiver moves, via electrodynamic coupling under the influence of the magnetic field from the transmitter, with respect to the receiving coil and induces the voltage in the receiving coil, thereby generating the electrical power, and

wherein the receiver is configured such that the movement of the magnet comprises translational motion relative to the receiving coil.

22. The method according to claim 21, wherein the electromechanical conversion element further comprises at least one of the following:

a piezoelectric material, wherein the movement of the magnet of the receiver causes mechanical stress upon the piezoelectric material; and

a variable capacitor, wherein the magnet is connected to the variable capacitor such that the magnet moves a plate of the variable capacitor.

23. The method according to claim 21, wherein the transmitter comprises one or more coils, and wherein the electromechanical conversion element and the magnet of the receiver are formed in a package separate from the transmitter.

24. The method according to claim 21, wherein the first frequency is between 120 Hz and 10 kHz.

25. The method according to claim 21, wherein the first frequency is between 10 Hz and 50 Hz.

26. The method according to claim 21, wherein the first frequency is between 70 Hz and 1 kHz.

27. The method according to claim 21, wherein the first frequency is less than about 10 kHz.

28. The method according to claim 21, further comprising:

generating and transmitting a second time-varying magnetic field at a second frequency different than the first frequency using the first transmitter; and

generating a second voltage in a second receiver comprising a second magnet by allowing the second magnet of the second receiver to move due to an influence of a magnetic force generated by the second magnetic field from the transmitter, the movement of the second magnet influencing a second electromechanical conversion element in the second receiver,

wherein the second electromechanical conversion element comprises a second receiving coil,

wherein the second magnet of the second receiver moves with respect to the second receiving coil and induces the second voltage in the second receiving coil, thereby generating the second voltage, and

wherein the second receiver is configured such that the movement of the second magnet is translational relative to the second receiving coil.

29. The method according to claim 21, wherein generating and transmitting a time-varying magnetic field comprises generating and transmitting a sinusoidal varying field, and wherein the first frequency is the mechanical resonance frequency of the receiver.

32. The method according to claim 28, wherein the second electromechanical conversion element further comprises at least one of:

a second piezoelectric material, wherein the movement of the second magnet of the second receiver causes mechanical stress upon the second piezoelectric material; and

a second variable capacitor, wherein the second magnet is connected to the second variable capacitor such that the second magnet moves a plate of the second variable capacitor.

30. A receiver of a wireless power transfer system, the receiver generating electrical power under an influence of an external magnetic field by electromechanical conversion, wherein the receiver comprises:

a magnet attached to an end of a vibrating structure, the magnet moving via electrodynamic coupling under the influence of the external magnetic field, and

an electromechanical conversion element coupled to the magnet,

wherein the electromechanical conversion element comprises a receiving coil,

wherein movement of the magnet induces a voltage in the receiving coil, and

wherein the receiver is configured such that the movement of the magnet comprises translational motion relative to the receiving coil.

31. The receiver according to claim 30, wherein the electromechanical conversion element further comprises at least one of the following:

a piezoelectric material on the vibrating structure, wherein movement of the magnet causes mechanical stress upon the piezoelectric material; and

a variable capacitor having a plate connected to the magnet such that movement of the magnet causes the plate to move, thereby generating a voltage.

33. The receiver according to claim 30, wherein the external magnetic field is a sinusoidal time-varying field at the mechanical resonance frequency of the receiver.
