1. A neurostimulation system for providing therapy to a patient, the neurostimulation system comprising:

  • a neurostimulation paddle lead configured to be operably positioned for use to stimulate spinal cord tissue of the patient, the neurostimulation paddle lead carrying a plurality of electrodes comprising at least four electrodes extending in a direction transverse to a longitudinal axis of the neurostimulation paddle lead, wherein the at least four electrodes include two inner electrodes and two outer electrodes flanking the two inner electrodes; and

a neurostimulator configured to convey electrical energy between the electrodes to create a medial-lateral electrical field having a locus on a first lateral side of the midline of the spinal cord tissue, and conveying electrical energy between the electrodes to create a medial-lateral electrical field having a locus on a second lateral side of the midline of the spinal cord tissue, the neurostimulator being further configured to repeatedly move the medial lateral electrical field back and forth between the first lateral side of the midline of the spinal cord tissue and the second lateral side of the midline of the spinal cord tissue to provide stimulation of dorsal column nerve fibers on the first and second lateral sides of the midline without stimulating dorsal column nerve fibers along the midline of the spinal cord tissue.
