1. A surgical instrument assembly, comprising:

  • a shaft assembly comprising a drive member;

    an end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is movable relative to said second jaw between an unclamped position and a clamped position to clamp tissue between said first jaw and said second jaw;

    a handle comprising an electric motor;

    a permanent magnet, wherein said permanent magnet generates a magnetic field;

    a rotatable output shaft operably coupled with said electric motor and said drive member, wherein said output shaft is rotatable about a longitudinal axis by said electric motor;

    a wire coil wound around said output shaft, wherein said wire coil is positioned in said magnetic field, and wherein said wire coil is rotated within said magnetic field when said rotatable output shaft is rotated about said longitudinal axis to induce a current in said wire coil and drive said drive member;

    a strain gauge mounted to said output shaft configured to detect strain within said output shaft as said output shaft drives said drive member; and

    a circuit mounted to said output shaft, wherein said wire coil and said strain gauge are electrically coupled to said circuit, and wherein said circuit is powered by said current induced in said wire coil.
