Stapling assembly
First Claim
1. A loading unit configured to be operably attached to a surgical instrument, wherein the surgical instrument is configured to selectively generate at least one control motion for operating said loading unit, and wherein said loading unit comprises:
- a carrier operably supporting a cartridge assembly therein;
an anvil supported relative to said carrier, wherein said anvil is movable from an open position toward a closed position;
a housing coupled to said carrier, wherein said housing is removably attachable to the surgical instrument;
an axial drive assembly at least partially supported within said housing, wherein said axial drive assembly is supported for selective axial travel through said cartridge assembly from a start position toward an end position upon the application of a rotary motion thereto; and
a motor supported within said housing, wherein said motor operably interfaces with said axial drive assembly to selectively apply said rotary motion thereto, and wherein said motor is configured to receive power from a power source such that said motor can only selectively receive power from said power source when said housing is operably coupled to the surgical instrument.

Abstract
A stapling assembly configured to be operably attached to a surgical system comprises a carrier operably supporting a cartridge assembly therein and an anvil. The stapling assembly further comprises a housing removably attachable to the surgical system and an axial drive assembly. The stapling assembly further comprises a motor supported within the housing, wherein the motor is operable to selectively transmit a rotary motion to the axial drive assembly. The motor can only transmit the rotary motion to the axial drive assembly when the housing is coupled to the surgical system and a power source is selectively coupled with the motor.
