Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention include an occupancy sensing unit configured to monitor an environment illuminated by a lighting fixture. An inventive occupancy sensing unit may include an occupancy sensor to detect radiation indicative of at least one occupancy event in the environment illuminated by the lighting fixture according to sensing parameters. The occupancy sensor can be coupled to a memory that logs sensor data, which represent the occupancy events, provided by the occupancy sensor. A processor coupled to the memory performs an analysis of the sensor data logged in the memory and adjusts the sensing parameters of the occupancy sensor based on the analysis.

Claims

1. An apparatus for adjusting illumination of a lighting fixture illuminating an environment, the apparatus comprising:

at least one occupancy sensor to provide sensor data representing at least one occupancy event in the environment illuminated by the lighting fixture;

a memory, operatively coupled to the at least one occupancy sensor, to log the sensor data provided by the at least one occupancy sensor; and

at least one processor, operatively coupled to the lighting fixture and the memory, to;

partition the logged sensor data into a plurality of clusters based on at least one classification parameter;

adjust a sensor timeout based on at least one cluster in the plurality of clusters, the sensor timeout representing an amount of time between a change in the at least one occupancy event and a change in the illumination of the lighting fixture;

generate at least one output state based on at least one characteristic of each cluster of at least a subset of the plurality of clusters; and

adjust the illumination of the lighting fixture based on the at least one output state and the sensor timeout.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one classification parameter comprises at least one of a time, a temperature, an object velocity, an object direction, and an object size associated with the logged sensor data.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one classification parameter includes at least two classification parameters, and the at least one processor is configured to partition the logged sensor data by correlating the logged sensor data with the at least two classification parameters.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one characteristic of each cluster of at least a subset of the plurality of clusters is at least one of a cluster size, a mean value of the at least one classification parameter, a median value of the at least one classification parameter, and a range of the at least one classification parameter.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one processor is configured to generate the at least one output state by identifying at least one signature associated with the at least one characteristic of each cluster of the at least one subset of the plurality of clusters and comparing the at least one signature to known signatures associated with past occupancy activities.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one processor is configured to adjust the illumination of the lighting fixture by varying at least one of a plurality of lighting settings of the lighting fixture, the plurality of lighting settings comprising duration, timing, and orientation of the illumination.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to analyze at least one of an occupancy pattern, a traffic pattern, and an energy consumption pattern based on the at least one output state.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to determine at least one lighting profile for the environment based on at least one of the occupancy pattern, the traffic pattern, and the energy consumption pattern.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one processor is configured to adjust the illumination based on the at least one output state by applying at least one predetermined operational rule.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the at least one predetermined operational rule includes a safety rule.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to predict a trajectory associated with the at least one occupancy event based on a location and an orientation of the at least one occupancy sensor in the environment.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the at least one processor is configured to adjust the illumination of the lighting fixture to illuminate the predicted trajectory.

13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to tune the at least one occupancy sensor for the at least one output state based on the at least one characteristic.

14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to adjust a sensing parameter of the at least one occupancy sensor based on the logged sensor data.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the sensing parameter is at least one of gain, sensitivity, offset, threshold, delay, hysteresis, polling frequency, and polling duty cycle of the at least one occupancy sensor.

16. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the at least one processor adjusts the sensor timeout of the at least one occupancy sensor in real-time.

17. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a communications interface, operatively coupled to the at least one processor, to communicate with at least one external device.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the at least one external device is the lighting fixture.

19. A method for adjusting illumination of a lighting fixture illuminating an environment, the method comprising:

acquiring sensor data from at least one occupancy sensor, the sensor data representing at least one occupancy event in the environment illuminated by the lighting fixture;

partitioning the sensor data into a plurality of clusters based on at least one classification parameter with at least one processor;

adjusting a sensor timeout based on at least one cluster in the plurality of clusters, the sensor timeout representing an amount of time between a change in the at least one occupancy event and a change in the illumination of the lighting fixture;

generating at least one output state based on at least one characteristic of each cluster of at least a subset of the plurality of clusters with the at least one processor; and

adjusting the illumination of the lighting fixture based on the at least one output state and the sensor timeout.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

predicting a trajectory associated with the at least one occupancy event based on a location and an orientation of the at least one occupancy sensor in the environment; and

adjusting the illumination of the lighting fixture to illuminate the predicted trajectory.

21. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

analyzing at least one of an occupancy pattern, a traffic pattern, and an energy consumption pattern based on the at least one output state.
