1. A fitness tracking device configured to be worn on a user'"'"'s wrist, the device comprising:

  • a heart rate sensor, wherein the heart rate sensor is configured to measure a heart rate of the user;

    a first motion sensor, wherein the first motion sensor is configured to measure motion of the user;

    a display module configured to provide an output to the user; and

    a processor communicatively coupled to the heart rate sensor, the first motion sensor, and the display module, wherein the processor is configured to;

    receive input indicating a start of an exercise session;

    during the exercise session, obtain a plurality of heart rate measurements of the user over a period of time from the heart rate sensor;

    during the exercise session, obtain motion data of the user over the period of time, wherein the motion data comprises a first plurality of motion measurements from the first motion sensor of the fitness tracking device;

    analyze the motion data of the user to determine, for each of the plurality of heart rate measurements, a corresponding work rate measurement, wherein each corresponding work rate measurement comprises a speed of the user at a corresponding time;

    determine, for each of the plurality of heart rate measurements, a first confidence level, wherein the first confidence level comprises a first variance associated with each heart rate measurement;

    determine, for each corresponding work rate measurement, a second confidence level, wherein the second confidence level comprises a second variance associated with each corresponding work rate measurement; and

    estimate a first energy expenditure rate using the plurality of heart rate measurements;

    estimate a second energy expenditure rate using the plurality of corresponding work rate measurements;

    estimate a weighted energy expenditure rate of the user by combining the first energy expenditure rate weighted by the first confidence level and the second energy expenditure rate weighted by the second confidence level; and

    output an indication of the weighted energy expenditure rate of the user to the display module;

    wherein the display module is configured to provide the indication of the weighted energy expenditure rate of the user as the output to the user.
