Abstract

A rectenna for high efficiency RF-to-DC wireless energy harvesting that includes an off-center-fed dipole antenna and a rectifying circuit, wherein the rectifying circuit comprises at least one rectifying diode. The input impedance of the antenna may be directly conjugate matched to the impedance of the rectifying circuit over a wide range of frequencies and/or under different operating conditions. The impedance matching network required by a conventional rectenna system may therefore be eliminated using the methods disclosed for the design and implementation of the rectenna. The rectenna offers consistently high RF-to-DC power conversion efficiency over a wide range of frequencies and under different operating conditions. The rectenna may be connectible to a rectifying circuit utilizing different types of rectifying diodes.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

an off-center-fed dipole antenna configured to receive a radio frequency (RF) signal, wherein the off-center-fed dipole antenna comprises;

a substrate;

a first off-center-fed dipole, including a first arm and a second arm disposed on the substrate;

a second off-center-fed dipole, including a third arm and a fourth arm disposed on the substrate;

a center-fed dipole, including a fifth arm and a sixth arm disposed on the substrate; and

a coplanar stripline disposed on the substrate, the coplanar stripline having a first conducting strip that connects to the first, the fourth, and the fifth arms, and having a second conducting strip that connects to the second, the third, and the sixth arms; and

a rectifying circuit connected to the coplanar stripline and configured to convert alternating current (AC) power generated by the off-center-fed dipole antenna to direct current (DC) power, wherein the rectifying circuit comprises a rectifying diode connected between the first conducting strip and the second conducting strip, an inductor serially connected between the second conducting strip and a third conducting strip, and a capacitor connected between the first conducting strip and the third conducting strip.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first off-center-fed dipole comprises:

a pitch angle of approximately 45 degree to the coplanar stripline;

a ratio of approximately 7/3 for a length of the first arm to a length of the second arm; and

a radial stub structure for the first arm and the second arm.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the radial stub structure comprises a sector angle of approximately 20 degrees for the first arm, and a sector angle of 30 degrees for the second arm.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the second off-center-fed dipole comprises:

a pitch angle of approximately 90 degrees to the first off-center-fed dipole;

a pitch angle of approximately 45 degrees to the coplanar stripline;

a ratio of approximately 7/3 for a length of the third arm to a length of the fourth arm; and

a radial stub structure for the third arm and the fourth arm.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the radial stub structure for the third arm and the fourth arm comprises a sector angle of approximately 20 degrees for the third arm, and a sector angle of approximately 30 degrees for the fourth arm.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the center-fed dipole comprises:

a pitch angle of approximately 90 degrees to the coplanar stripline;

a pitch angle of approximately 45 degrees to the first off-center-fed dipole;

a pitch angle of approximately 45 degrees to the second off-center-fed dipole; and

a radial stub structure for the fifth arm and the sixth arm.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the radial stub structure comprises a sector angle of approximately 30 degrees for each of the fifth arm and the sixth arm.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein an impedance of the off-center-fed dipole antenna is substantially conjugate matched to an impedance of the rectifying circuit.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein an impedance of the off-center-fed dipole antenna is conjugate matched to an impedance of the rectifying circuit based on a ratio of a length of the first arm to a length of the second arm, and wherein the apparatus is configured to have a range of operating frequencies centered around 0.9 GHz.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus is configured to have a range of operating frequencies between 1.8 GHz and 2.4 GHz.

11. An apparatus comprising:

an off-center-fed dipole antenna comprising at least six dipole arms that are configured to receive radio frequency (RF) signals;

a coplanar stripline comprising a first conducting strip, a second conducting strip, and connections to the at least six dipole arms; and

a rectifying circuit connected to the off-center-fed dipole antenna via the coplanar stripline, wherein the rectifying circuit comprises a rectifying diode connected between the first conducting strip and the second conducting strip, an inductor serially connected between the second conducting strip and a third conducting strip, and a capacitor connected between the first conducting strip and the third conducting strip, wherein the rectifying circuit is configured to convert the RF signals received by the off-center-fed dipole antenna to direct current (DC) power, and wherein an impedance of the off-center-fed dipole antenna is conjugate matched to an impedance of the rectifying circuit.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the at least six dipole arms comprise:

at least one symmetric dipole; and

at least two asymmetric dipoles.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the at least two asymmetric dipoles comprise:

a first asymmetric dipole including a first arm and a second arm, wherein a length of the first arm is greater than twice a length of the second arm; and

a second asymmetric off-center-fed dipole including a third arm and a fourth arm, wherein a length of the third arm is greater than twice a length of the fourth arm.

14. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the apparatus is configured to have a first range of operating frequencies that is centered around a frequency of operation of about 0.9 GHz and a second range of operating frequencies between approximately 1.8 GHz to 2.4 GHz.

15. An apparatus comprising:

an antenna comprising three or more dipoles including at least one symmetric dipole and an asymmetric dipole;

a coplanar stripline comprising a first conducting strip, a second conducting strip, and connections to the three or more dipoles; and

a rectifying circuit connected to the antenna via the coplanar stripline, wherein the rectifying circuit comprises a rectifying diode connected between the first conducting strip and the second conducting strip, an inductor serially connected between the second conducting strip and a third conducting strip, and a capacitor connected between the first conducting strip and the third conducting strip, and wherein an input impedance of the antenna is conjugate matched to an impedance of the rectifying circuit to within 50 percent resulting in a reflection coefficient smaller than −

6 dB.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein a length of a longer arm of the asymmetric dipole is greater than twice a length of a shorter arm of the asymmetric dipole.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the asymmetric dipole comprises:

a pitch angle of approximately 45 degrees to the coplanar stripline; and

a radial stub structure associated with the shorter arm and the longer arm.

18. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the at least one symmetric dipole comprises:

a pitch angle of approximately 90 degrees to the coplanar stripline;

a pitch angle of approximately 45 degrees to the asymmetric dipole; and

a radial stub structure associated with a first arm and a second arm of the symmetric dipole.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the radial stub structure comprises a sector angle of approximately 30 degrees.
