1. A wireless transmit/receive unit, WTRU, comprising:

  • a processor configured to transmit a random access preamble;

    wherein the processor is further configured to receive a downlink transmission, wherein the downlink transmission comprises a control portion comprising a plurality of control channel elements, CCEs, and a subset of the plurality of CCEs corresponds to a common portion of the control portion, wherein the common portion of the control portion has a masked cyclic redundancy check, CRC, associated therewith for a plurality of WTRUs and does not address a WTRU-specific identity of the WTRU;

    wherein the processor is further configured to;

    determining random access radio network temporary identities, RA-RNTIs, utilized by the plurality of WTRUs;

    demasking the masked cyclic redundancy check, CRC, using the determined RA-RNTI; and

    performing decoding within the subset of the plurality of CCEs to detect downlink control information for the WTRU;

    wherein the downlink control information indicates a resource allocation to be used for processing a random access channel, RACH, response included in a data portion of the downlink transmission;

    wherein the processor is further configured to process the RACH response in the data portion according to the downlink control information; and

    wherein the plurality of CCEs contain transmission format and Modulation Coding Scheme (MCS) information such that the processor is configured to decode the RACH response within the data portion using the MCS information contained within the plurality of CCEs.
