1. An ultrasonic transducer probe assembly comprising:

  • a probe cover (20);

    an array of transducer elements (170) located in the probe housing behind the acoustic window and configured to transmit and receive ultrasound energy through the acoustic window;

    an integrated circuit (160) coupled to the transducer elements in the probe housing and configured to process signals transmitted or received by the array;

    a probe connector (32) configured to connect the transducer probe to an ultrasound system;

    a cable (28) connected between the probe cover and the probe connector;

    a bundle of electrical conductors extending within the cable, the bundle of electrical conductors coupled between the probe cover and the probe connector; and

    a fluid-based closed loop cooling system, comprising;

    a closed fluid circuit extending from the probe housing through the cable to the probe connector;

    a pump (26) coupled to the fluid circuit that pumps fluid through the circuit; and

    a heat exchanger (16) located in the probe case that extracts heat from the transducer array and the integrated circuit,wherein the closed fluid circuit in the cable comprises an incoming fluid conduit (22) comprising a first spiral winding and an outgoing fluid conduit (24) comprising a second spiral winding, wherein the first and second spiral windings are wound in the same spiral direction such that the incoming and outgoing fluid conduits are always separated from each other within the cable and the incoming and outgoing fluid conduits have a common central channel through which the bundle of electrical conductors extends;

    wherein a connector plate (60) is provided within the probe connector, the connector plate being configured such that extracted fluid will flow therethrough to heat the connector plate, and when the probe connector is connected to the ultrasound system, the connector plate is in pressing contact with a cooling plate (62) that is cooled by equipment in the ultrasound system.
