1. A method for controlling at least one piezoelectric actuator of a fuel injector of an internal combustion engine of a vehicle, which acts on a valve means for opening or closing the injector to allow or stop, respectively, the injection of fuel into a combustion chamber of the engine, comprising the steps of:

  • applying a nominal first charge to the piezoelectric actuator as a function of the requested torque and the engine speed, in order to open the valve means of the injector for injecting fuel into the combustion chamber, said first charge being required to open the injector and being called nominal control charge (Qc),commanding the injector to close by applying an electric discharge (Qd) for closing the valve device to the piezoelectric actuator so as to stop the injection of fuel,the control method is characterized in that it is applied during operation from an engine control unit on board the vehicle, and in that it further comprises the steps of;

    this step involves applying, in addition to said nominal control charge (Qc), at least one second charge, called polarization charge (Qp), to said piezoelectric actuator at said nominal control charge (Qc) after the application of said nominal control charge (Qc) and before the step involving commanding the closing of said injector, so as to polarize said piezoelectric actuator during the opening phase of said injector and during said injection of said fuel into said combustion chamber;

    wherein the polarization charging (Qp) defined by the corresponding current profile applied to the piezoelectric actuator is separated in time from the nominal control charging (Qc).
