1. A method of treating a microbial infestation in a process water system, the method comprising the steps of:

  • introducing into the process water system a biocidal composition comprising an oxidant and an oxidant stabilizer that allows the oxidant to persist as a biocide, detecting the presence of nitrifying organisms capable of degrading the oxidant stabilizer,if it is detected that a composition of matter capable of neutralizing the nitrifying organisms is introduced without otherwise compromising the efficacy of the biocidal composition, wherein the oxidant comprises chlorine, the oxidant stabilizer comprises urea, wherein the nitrifying organisms are tolerant to a urea-stable chlorine program, andwherein the neutralizing composition comprises glutaraldehyde, DBNPA, or a combination thereof, or the neutralizing composition comprises sodium hypochlorite.
