1. A portable handheld pressure support system (10) configured to deliver a pressurized flow of breathable gas to the airway of a subject (12), the pressure support system comprising:

  • (a) a pressure generator (14) configured to generate the pressurized flow of breathable gas;

    (b) a subject interface (16) configured to communicate the pressurized flow of breathable gas to the airway of the subject;

    (c) one or more sensors (18) configured to generate output signals conveying information related to one or more gas parameters of the pressurized flow of breathable gas;

    (d) one or more processors (20) configured to execute computer program modules, the computer program modules comprising;

    (1) a control module (54) configured to control operation of the pressure generator to generate the pressurized flow of breathable gas based on the output signals from the one or more sensors in accordance with a positive pressure support therapy regime indicative of inspiratory pressure levels and expiratory pressure levels,(2) an hyperinflation module (56) configured to identify hyperinflation during exhalation based on the output signal, an(3) An expiratory pressure module (58) configured to control the pressure generator to adjust the expiratory pressure level to mitigate over-inflation during expiration in response to the over-inflation module identifying over-inflation, the expiratory pressure level being a positive end expiratory pressure level, wherein the adjusted positive end expiratory pressure level is determined based on an algorithm having an algorithm input determined based on lung resistance and/or reactance information;

    (e) a portable power supply system (26) configured to power the pressure generator, the one or more sensors, and the one or more processors;

    (f) a housing (28) configured to house the pressure generator, the subject interface, the one or more sensors, the one or more processors, and the power supply system; and

    (g) a handle (30) attached to and/or formed by the housing, the handle configured to be grasped by the subject to hold the housing in place relative to the airway of the subject when the pressurized flow of breathable gas is delivered to the airway of the subject.
