1. A method for directing a packet in a packet flow from a source to a destination by a network controller, the method comprising:

  • transmitting a first instruction to a first node in a network to instruct the first node to transmit a first data packet in a packet flow from a source end to a destination along a first route, wherein the first route has a first time delay;

    transmitting a second instruction to a node in the network to transmit a second packet in the packet flow along a second route different from the first route, wherein the second route has a second delay, and the duration of the second delay is less than the duration of the first delay;

    the first data packet precedes the second data packet in the message stream;

    transmitting a third instruction to a node in the second route to delay the second data packet from reaching the destination;

    wherein delaying the arrival of the second data packet at the destination reduces the likelihood that the first data packet and the second data packet arrive at the destination out of order;

    wherein the node to which the third instruction for delaying the second packet is sent is one of the second route except the egress node and the ingress node;

    the network is a source routing network;

    a logical segment identification included in the packet header indicates a delay to be implemented by the node in the second route.
