1. Process for removing at least one metal or metal compound selected from the group consisting of mercury and arsenic from a fluid, in which process the fluid is contacted with a solid collector of mercury and/or arsenic comprising a solid inorganic carrier or dispersant, mainly copper and sulphur at least partly in the form of copper sulphide, said collector being the product of the steps consisting in:

  • a) adding at least one copper compound other than sulfide to a solid inorganic carrier or dispersant,b) provided that said compound is not copper oxide, the product obtained in step (a) is melt-baked so as to convert at least partially the copper compound or compounds contained therein into copper oxide (CuO and/or Cu)2O)(c) Contacting the product obtained in step (b) or, if step (b) is not present, the product obtained in step (a) with elemental sulphur.(d) Heat treating the product obtained in step (c) in a non-oxidising atmosphere under a gas purge at a temperature and for a time sufficient to enable the formation of the existing metal sulphide or sulphides.
